About the Husaberg 2004-2005 carbureted FC / FE / FS four-stroke platform
Husaberg was created in Sweden in 1988 by members of the Husqvarna development team who remained behind when Husqvarna’s motorcycle operations moved to Italy. From the outset, the new marque concentrated on lightweight, competition-oriented four-stroke off-road motorcycles, building its identity around compact single-cylinder engines and unconventional engineering. Husqvarna’s official brand history records the 1988 split and the eventual reunion of the two names in 2013. See Husqvarna Motorcycles’ official brand history.
By the 2004-2005 period, Husaberg had developed a broad competition range around one liquid-cooled, single-cylinder four-stroke architecture with a balancer shaft, overhead camshaft and four valves. The motocross side was represented by the FC 450 and FC 550, the enduro family by the FE 450, FE 501, FE 550 and FE 650e/6, and the supermoto line by the FS 450 and FS 650e/6. That spread let Husaberg use a common engineering philosophy across motocross, enduro and road-based supermoto competition.
The families were differentiated as much by chassis and gearing as by displacement. FC motocross machines used four-speed transmissions, long-travel WP suspension and 21/19-inch off-road wheels. FE enduro versions used six-speed gearboxes, electric-start equipment on the e/6 models, 21/18-inch wheels and road-legal lighting. The FS supermoto bikes combined the six-speed drivetrain with 17-inch wheels, reduced suspension travel and a 310 mm front brake disc. Across the range, Keihin FCR-MX 39 or 41 carburetors, hydraulic multi-disc clutches, Kokusan digital ignition and WP PDS rear suspension gave the bikes a distinct competition four-stroke off-road platform identity.
The 2005 specification represented an evolutionary step rather than a wholesale redesign. Factory data shows updated WP fork and shock settings, revised final-drive gearing and several engine-detail changes. The 450 FC/FS-C gained a revised dual valve-spring arrangement, while 650-series service notes identify changes to crankshaft dimensions and seal installation. These detail revisions illustrate Husaberg’s development approach in this era: retain the lightweight core platform, then tune engine, suspension, gearing and braking to the demands of motocross, enduro or supermoto use.
This factory publication covers both 2004 and 2005 specifications. Its 2004 technical section includes FC 450/4, FC 550/4, FE 450e/6, FE 501e/6, FE 550e/6, FE 650e/6, FS 450e/6 and FS 650e/6, while the 2005 tables document the revised 450, 550 and 650 specifications and wiring. Related manuals are grouped in the Husaberg service manual catalog.
