About the BMW R1150GS
BMW launched the R1150GS in September 1999 as the successor to the R1100GS, continuing a four-valve Boxer GS platform that had brought long-distance touring comfort and modern road manners to the dual-sport category. Its development built on the successful R1100GS while preserving the defining GS combination of an upright riding position, long-travel suspension, shaft drive and a horizontally opposed twin. BMW's September 1999 launch release highlighted the larger engine, strengthened frame and revised styling that distinguished the replacement.
The R1150GS retained the Oilhead air- and oil-cooled Boxer concept but increased displacement from 1,085 to 1,130 cc using 101 mm cylinder bores and a 70.5 mm stroke. The four-valve engine produced 85 hp (62.5 kW) at 6,750 rpm and 98 Nm at 5,250 rpm, with Bosch Motronic MA 2.4 electronic fuel injection. A new six-speed gearbox replaced the R1100GS five-speed arrangement, supporting both low-speed control and relaxed distance riding. A hydraulically operated dry clutch and enclosed shaft final drive preserved the service and operating characteristics familiar to Boxer owners.
The new GS also received changes to its appearance and structure. The asymmetric twin headlamp, shorter signature beak and reshaped windscreen made it immediately recognizable, while a modified main frame and the established BMW Telelever front suspension and Paralever rear suspension contributed to stability over mixed road surfaces. These technologies helped the large adventure touring motorcycle combine predictable braking behavior, luggage-carrying ability and resilience on imperfect roads. The model appealed to riders using one bike for commuting, two-up travel, long journeys and occasional unpaved routes rather than trying to emulate a lightweight competition enduro.
BMW developed the range further after this early production period. In 2002, the R1150GS Adventure offered greater long-distance and off-pavement capability with changes to suspension travel, touring equipment and other practical details. It is a related but separately specified variant, not a model automatically covered by this standard R1150GS manual. From late 2002 into model year 2003, BMW also introduced dual-spark ignition to Boxer models, creating important engine and electrical differences from the single-spark motorcycles described by the early 2000 publication. BMW documents the Adventure introduction and the dual-ignition update in its period press material.
The R1150GS became one of BMW Motorrad's defining models and helped turn the large-capacity Boxer GS into an established global touring platform. The R1200GS, introduced in 2004, succeeded it with a lighter structure and additional engine development, while the R1150GS Adventure remained important to the travel-enduro story. For the wider Boxer workshop range, see the BMW service manuals catalog. The factory publication offered here is dated February 2000, with updated service sheets from April 2000; its conservatively listed 1999–2000 coverage reflects that launch-era specification, rather than later twin-spark or Adventure-specific procedures.
