About the Moto Guzzi California 1400
The Moto Guzzi California name has roots in the marque’s relationship with American police and touring motorcycles at the end of the 1960s. The earliest California models drew on the V7 Ambassador and V850 GT family, adopting the distinctive windscreen, comfortable seating and weather protection of large American-style touring machines. By the early 1970s the California had become a recognizable production model. It evolved through the T3, California II and III and later 1100 variants, consistently combining Moto Guzzi’s transverse 90-degree V-twin and shaft drive with a relaxed riding position. Contemporary retrospectives trace this design continuity, including Motorcyclist’s historical comparison of the early police-oriented California with the 1400.
The major reinvention was the California 1400, unveiled at EICMA in November 2012 as a new-generation flagship. Although it retained the celebrated cylinder-heads-outward V-twin appearance and shaft final drive, it was substantially redesigned rather than simply restyled from the older 1100. Engineers developed a 1,379.6 cc air-and-oil-cooled engine, a six-speed gearbox, a revised steel chassis and elastic engine mounting to reduce vibration reaching the rider. Sophisticated electronics made the model notably different from its predecessors: ride-by-wire throttle control with selectable maps, MGCT traction control, ABS and cruise control. Piaggio’s 2013 launch announcement documents the significance of these changes for the California range.
Moto Guzzi initially offered two personalities for the new model: the Custom and Touring cruiser variants. The Touring, introduced in Europe in late 2012 for the 2013 riding season, emphasized long-distance travel with a substantial windshield, panniers and additional passenger comfort. The Custom, presented in early 2013, carried less bodywork and adopted a stronger power-cruiser stance, with wider handlebars and a different rear-suspension adjustment specification. The two versions shared the new engine and electronic architecture but offered distinct riding experiences and weights. The California 1400 Custom won Cycle World’s cruiser-class award in 2013, an early indication of the new platform’s reception; this was confirmed in a contemporary Piaggio Group release.
The family expanded during the following seasons without abandoning its distinctive mechanical layout. A Touring SE special edition added different trim and touring-oriented appointments to the established Touring concept. The 2015-era technical specifications distinguish Touring, Touring SE and Custom for dimensions, weight and rear suspension, confirming these variants were part of the same California 1400 lineage. Moto Guzzi also developed related 1,400 cc cruisers such as the Eldorado and Audace from the broader platform around 2015, but they had different appearance and component configurations and should not automatically be treated as models covered by this California 1400 workshop edition. The later MGX-21 further extended the large-displacement family in a bagger direction.
This large-displacement Italian touring cruiser thus marked a particularly important transition in California history: from the mechanically traditional big-block tourer to a digitally managed luxury motorcycle while retaining the visual identity established in the 1970s. Its combination of the 90-degree V-twin, shaft drive, modern engine controls and a stable two-up touring chassis formed the basis of the 2013–2015 Custom, Touring and Touring SE versions. This is the model-history context for Piaggio publication B043157, copyright 2015; the precise year-by-year compatibility of individual service procedures is not specified in the book.
