About the Moto Guzzi Stelvio 8V 1200 ABS

Moto Guzzi brought the Stelvio into the large-capacity adventure-touring class after unveiling it at EICMA in 2007. Named for the celebrated Stelvio Pass in the Italian Alps, the motorcycle followed the marque's earlier Quota dual-purpose machines but was designed for the newer generation of long-distance road and trail travel. It reached the press in spring 2008 with a distinctive twin-headlamp fairing, tall riding position, steel twin-beam frame and exposed transverse 90-degree V-twin. The Stelvio made the traditional Mandello del Lario engine layout and shaft final drive an alternative to the other European maxi-enduro platforms. A Piaggio Group historical account confirms the 2007 presentation and 2008 commercial introduction.

The early Stelvio 1200 featured the 1,151 cc Quattrovalvole big-block engine with four valves per cylinder, electronic fuel injection and a six-speed gearbox. In 2009 the line expanded with the NTX, a more travel-focused version featuring protective equipment and luggage designed for extended expeditions. The NTX brought the Stelvio's name back into the off-road-touring heritage previously associated with older Moto Guzzi trail bikes, and it introduced ABS into the maxi-enduro family. At the same time the manufacturer refined intake and camshaft characteristics to strengthen useful torque delivery. Both standard and expedition versions retained the CARC reactive shaft-drive arrangement and a 19-inch front wheel, emphasizing stability and low-maintenance travel rather than hard-core off-road competition.

The major redesign arrived for the 2011 model year, marketed as the Stelvio 8V 1200 ABS in the catalog hierarchy. The revised bodywork integrated a reshaped upper fairing, windshield and tank, making the motorcycle more aerodynamic and comfortable over distance. Most significantly, the fuel tank increased to 32 litres, nearly doubling the range of the earlier 18-litre Stelvio. The dashboard, fuel display, seat and front-end treatment were revised, although the steel chassis and general engine layout remained familiar. The manufacturer also updated camshaft profiles, oil cooling and electronic fuel metering, using twin oxygen sensors to improve smoothness, emissions and midrange response. The official April 2011 press presentation documents the redesign and technical progress.

For 2011, the standard Stelvio and the NTX continued as related but separately equipped versions of the same Italian shaft-drive adventure-tourer. The standard bike offered the large tank, adjusted weather protection, ABS and revised Quattrovalvole engine in a road-oriented touring configuration. The NTX added aluminium panniers, extensive engine and sump protection, full handguards and supplementary halogen headlights to serve riders travelling farther from paved roads. The differences in equipment and vehicle trim mattered even where the two models shared the 1,151 cc mechanical foundation. Piaggio's March 2011 launch announcement distinguishes these versions and their roles within the range.

The 2011 redesign became the foundation for the later years of the original air-and-oil-cooled Stelvio line, which remained associated with its unusually large fuel capacity, comfortable two-up riding position and transverse-V-twin character. The name subsequently disappeared from the range before returning on the 2024 Stelvio, a wholly different, liquid-cooled motorcycle based on Moto Guzzi's newer Compact Block engine platform. That later motorcycle does not share the 2011 engine, electronics or workshop procedures. The original 2011 standard model is identifiable by its 32-litre tank, revised fairing and 1,151 cc four-valve engine; the specific factory document for this version is B043078, while the 2011 NTX had separate publication B043090.
