About the Moto Guzzi Stelvio 1200 NTX
Moto Guzzi returned to the large-capacity adventure-touring category when it presented the Stelvio 1200 at EICMA in 2007 and brought the motorcycle to market in 2008. Its name came from the famous Stelvio Pass in the Italian Alps, a mountain road associated with steep climbs and numerous hairpin bends. The new machine followed earlier Guzzi dual-purpose motorcycles such as the Quota, but it drew much of its technical character from the contemporary big-block V-twin family. A transverse 90-degree twin, shaft final drive, upright riding position, tall suspension and 19-inch front wheel gave the Stelvio a distinct alternative to the BMW GS-led adventure-touring market.
The Stelvio 1200 NTX arrived in 2009 as a more travel- and expedition-oriented variation on the original Stelvio. The NTX letters had already appeared on Moto Guzzi trail motorcycles in the 1980s, and their return linked the new bike with the marque's earlier long-distance adventure heritage. Factory equipment included protective engine and sump bars, handguards, supplementary halogen lights and aluminium side cases. Spoked wheels and a more off-road-focused equipment package reinforced the distinction from the standard Stelvio, while the core steel chassis, six-speed transmission and reactive shaft-drive system remained shared with the broader 1200 platform. Piaggio's official brand history identifies the 2009 NTX debut and its engine revisions.
The original 1,151 cc Quattrovalvole V-twin used a 95 mm bore and 81.2 mm stroke, air and oil cooling, four valves per cylinder and single-overhead-camshaft operation for each head. For the 2009 NTX introduction, engineers revised the cam profiles, induction airbox and fuel-injection mapping to strengthen response at lower engine speeds. The updated engine delivered a claimed 113 Nm of peak torque at 5,800 rpm, improving the flexible mid-range performance valued when carrying passengers and luggage. Its Magneti Marelli electronic injection worked with a hydraulically operated dry clutch and six-speed gearbox. The NTX also helped introduce ABS to this generation of the Stelvio, making it a more capable Italian long-distance adventure-touring motorcycle.
For 2010, Moto Guzzi refined the first-generation Stelvio further, including suspension and equipment changes aimed at everyday rideability. The characteristic asymmetrical dual headlamp front end, hand-adjustable windscreen and upright touring cockpit remained, and the contemporary NTX retained its compact 18-litre fuel tank. Although the motorcycle could accommodate substantial luggage and travel equipment, range was one of the characteristics that the company would address in its next major update. The same general family also featured selectable road and dual-purpose tyres, adjustable front and rear suspension, twin front discs and a single-sided rear swingarm incorporating the Cardan shaft final drive. A period model-development chronology distinguishes the 2009 and 2010 changes.
A significant redesign was unveiled at EICMA in 2010 for the 2011 Stelvio 1200 8V and NTX range. The new generation received altered fairing and windshield shapes, further engine changes, an expanded 32-litre fuel tank and additional electronic features. This development created a clear difference from the earlier 18-litre first-generation NTX; the 2011 factory workshop literature should not be treated as interchangeable with every 2010 procedure. Moto Guzzi later withdrew this first Stelvio lineage before reintroducing the name on an entirely new liquid-cooled adventure platform in the 2020s. The 2010 service publication 895796 represents the original-generation NTX at this transition point. Related manuals can be found in the Moto Guzzi manual catalog. The publication confirms its 2010 edition, not a complete factory year-by-year compatibility table.
