About the BMW R1200CL

BMW expanded its modern cruiser family with the R1200CL, unveiled for model year 2003 after the original R 1200 C had established BMW in the cruiser segment from 1997 onward. BMW's official launch press kit was issued in July 2002 and announced a world premiere at INTERMOT in Munich that September, with market introduction expected in autumn 2002. The CL's purpose was distinct from the more minimalist R 1200 C: BMW combined the low-seat cruiser format with long-distance touring equipment, integrated luggage and substantial wind protection.

The powertrain remained rooted in BMW's 1,170 cm³ Boxer architecture but was tuned specifically for low-speed torque. The air/oil-cooled flat twin uses a 101 × 73 mm bore and stroke, 10.0:1 compression and four valves per cylinder, producing 45 kW (61 hp) at 5,000 rpm and 98 N·m at just 3,000 rpm. Bosch Motronic MA 2.4 manages injection and ignition, while a hydraulically operated single dry-plate clutch feeds a Getrag six-speed gearbox. The first five ratios are closely spaced for cruiser use and sixth is a tall overdrive, with shaft final drive through a 2.62:1 rear bevel.

The chassis was extensively adapted to the CL's weight, wider tyres and touring role. BMW retained Telelever front suspension but used a 30 mm longer control arm, revised fork geometry and 144 mm of wheel travel. At the rear, a reinforced Monolever arrangement provides 120 mm of travel. A 1,641 mm wheelbase, 150/80-16 front tyre and 170/80-15 rear tyre give the motorcycle its long, substantial stance. Fully Integral ABS with twin 305 mm front discs and a 285 mm rear disc was central to the braking package. With a road-ready weight of 308 kg, the CL was deliberately conceived as a luxury Boxer cruiser rather than a lightweight custom.

Touring equipment was equally important to the model's identity. The four-headlamp fairing, integrated side cases and 45-litre top case gave a total lockable luggage volume of roughly 108 litres. Cruise control and heated grips were standard, while the higher-trim R 1200 CLC added the stereo radio/single-CD system and heated comfort seat. For model year 2004 BMW revised the wider cruiser family with twin-spark ignition and other drivetrain and braking updates. BMW's 2004 cruiser-family material also shows the CL's influence on the R 1200 C Montauk, which borrowed the widened Telelever front end, wheels and tyres from the luxury model.

This listing is for BMW Motorcycle Technical Training material dated 09/02. It covers the R 1200 CL's technical features and specifications, uncrating and setup, pre-delivery inspection, retail handover, 600-mile inspection procedures, special tools, complete electrical schematics, component locations and alarm-system programming. The 2002 catalog year denotes the publication date; BMW identifies the motorcycle itself as a model-year 2003 introduction. Related material is grouped in the BMW R1200CL category.
