Ducati Multistrada 1000 DS Service Manual (2004)

Ducati launched the Multistrada 1000 DS in 2003 as the first generation of a new model family built around versatility rather than a single traditional category. Ducati’s official Multistrada history describes the original concept as a motorcycle intended to combine sporting road performance with greater comfort and touring usefulness. The 17-inch front wheel, upright riding position and long-travel suspension gave it a supermotard-influenced stance, while the trellis frame and Desmodue V-twin kept the machine closely tied to Ducati’s established engineering identity.

The first 1000 DS used a 992 cm³ air-cooled, two-valve-per-cylinder L-twin with Dual Spark ignition. In the factory specification documented here, the engine has a 94 mm bore, 71.5 mm stroke and 10.0:1 compression ratio, producing 62 kW (84 hp) at 8,000 rpm and 8.4 kgm of torque at 6,000 rpm. It is paired with a six-speed gearbox, hydraulically operated dry multi-plate clutch and chain final drive. A chromium-molybdenum steel trellis frame, single-sided rear swingarm and adjustable 43 mm upside-down fork formed the chassis around which Ducati built its early air-cooled sport-touring crossover concept.

For 2004, the Multistrada 1000 DS remained the core model of the new family. The design combined a relatively long 1,462 mm wheelbase and 20-litre fuel tank with 17-inch road wheels, twin 320 mm Brembo front discs and a 200 kg dry weight. Unlike later adventure-oriented Multistradas, the first generation was strongly road biased. Ducati itself describes the original machine as a crossover with supermotard-style corner entry and sportbike performance rather than as a conventional large-wheel adventure motorcycle.

The family expanded quickly after the original 1000 DS. Ducati’s history records the arrival of the more highly specified S version and the smaller 620 at Intermot 2004 for the 2005 range. The 620 broadened access to the platform, while the S added higher-specification suspension and trim. Ducati’s published Multistrada milestones then place the 1100 in 2007, followed by the completely reworked Multistrada 1200 in 2010. That 2010 motorcycle marked the second generation and a major technical break, introducing the liquid-cooled Testastretta 11° engine and electronic riding modes. The 1000 DS therefore occupies the beginning of the lineage, before the Multistrada evolved into a much larger and more electronically sophisticated touring family.
