Kawasaki ER-6n / ER-6n ABS Service Manual (2012)

Kawasaki introduced the ER-6n as part of its mid-size road range in the mid-2000s, pairing a compact parallel-twin engine with an approachable naked-bike chassis. Kawasaki's 2006 annual report identified the new ER-6n as a lightweight sport model that earned strong recognition in Europe, alongside the fully faired ER-6f. The platform was substantially refreshed for 2009; Kawasaki's 2009 annual report describes a full model change for both ER-6 variants, establishing the second major stage of the family before the next redesign arrived for 2012.

The 2012 machine covered here represents that next redesign and is commonly treated as the third generation of the ER-6n platform. At its 2011 Milan Show presentation, Kawasaki described the new ER-6n as a middle-sized naked sport bike that retained the easy, entertaining character of its predecessor while adopting a more aggressive design, revised suspension settings and a new double-pipe frame. The 649 cc liquid-cooled DOHC parallel twin was also retuned for stronger everyday-range torque. Factory specifications list an 83.0 × 60.0 mm bore and stroke, 10.8:1 compression, Keihin TTK38 fuel injection, 53 kW maximum output in full-power specification and 64 N·m of torque.

As a middleweight parallel-twin naked motorcycle, the ER-6n emphasized usable road performance rather than supersport ergonomics. The tubular chassis, upright riding position, 17-inch wheels, 120/70 front and 160/60 rear tyres, conventional telescopic fork and single rear shock were aimed at predictable everyday handling. Dual front discs and a rear disc provide braking, while the ER650F version adds anti-lock braking hardware and increases factory curb mass from 204 kg for the ER650E to 206 kg. Kawasaki also produced regional full-power and restricted versions, including an Australian LAMS specification, without changing the basic 649 cc engine architecture.

The ER-6n remained part of Kawasaki's road range through the middle of the decade, but the next major break came for 2017. Kawasaki's 2017 Z650/Ninja 650 technical overview explicitly identifies the ER-6n/6f as the previous models and describes a new lightweight steel frame, reduced mass, improved fuel efficiency and Euro IV emissions performance. The Z650 therefore replaced the naked ER-6n name while carrying forward the concept of an accessible 649 cc parallel-twin road bike.

This download is specifically the early `99924-1453-01` factory publication dated August 5, 2011. Its Model Application table lists 2012 ER650EC and ER650FC only, so the old 2012-2016 catalog claim has been narrowed to 2012 rather than assuming later service revisions are identical.
