About the Kawasaki 1st Generation (A/B/D-series)

Kawasaki's KX motocross lineage began in 1973, and the company's official KX overview describes the series as competition machinery developed around its long-running “Built to Win” philosophy. In the 2001 model year, the KX85, KX85-II and KX100 formed a closely related progression for younger and developing motocross riders. Kawasaki's factory records identify the KX85-A1, larger-wheel KX85-B1 and KX100-D1 at the start of the platform covered here, giving riders three chassis and displacement choices built around the same competition-focused design approach.

The shared engineering is a small-bore two-stroke motocross platform. The KX85 models use an 84 cc liquid-cooled piston-reed single with a 48.5 × 45.8 mm bore and stroke, while the KX100 increases bore to 52.5 mm for 99 cc. All use a Keihin PWK28 carburetor, Kawasaki's KIPS exhaust power-valve system, digital CDI ignition, 32:1 petrol/oil premix, a wet multi-disc clutch and a six-speed constant-mesh gearbox driving the rear wheel by chain. This combination kept the motorcycles mechanically simple and light while allowing the power-valve system to broaden useful two-stroke power across the rev range.

The chassis layout separates the three versions more clearly. The small-wheel KX85 A-series uses 17-inch front and 14-inch rear wheels, while the B-series KX85-II and KX100 use the taller 19/16-inch combination. All employ a tubular motocross frame, long-travel fork, Uni-Trak rear suspension and front and rear disc brakes. Factory specifications show 275 mm of suspension travel at both ends, while the maintenance schedule is organized around races and operating hours rather than road mileage. Across the decade Kawasaki made running changes to ignition timing, KIPS hardware, transmission-oil capacity, primary-drive components, braking hardware and curb-mass specifications while retaining the core architecture.

The factory application sequence shows how long this first-generation family remained in production. KX85 A/B codes run continuously from A1/B1 in 2001 through AAF/BAF in 2010, while the KX100 D-series in this edition ends at D9F for 2009. Kawasaki's Owner Center now lists later service-manual revision 99924-1265-13 for the KX85A/KX100D family, reflecting continued documentation updates beyond this -10 edition. The next major factory-manual generation on this site is the 2014 KX85 / KX85-II / KX100 manual, which moves to CE/DE/FE model codes and revised engine and chassis specifications.

This download is specifically publication 99924-1265-10, 10th Edition (1), dated April 8, 2009. Its own Model Application table directly supports KX85 and KX85-II through 2010 and KX100 through 2009, so the former 2000–2013 catalog claim has been narrowed to the years actually documented by this PDF. Owners of 2011–2013 machines should use the appropriate later revision rather than assuming this edition contains every subsequent service update.
