Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10 Service Manual (1988-1990)

Kawasaki introduced the Ninja ZX-10 for 1988 as its new large-capacity performance flagship. Known in many markets by the Tomcat name, the ZX-10 followed the GPZ1000RX and continued Kawasaki's rapid development of high-performance Ninja motorcycles during the second half of the 1980s. Kawasaki's US records identify the first model as the 1988 ZX1000-B1, followed by the B2 for 1989 and B3 for 1990.

Its 997 cc liquid-cooled four-cylinder engine used dual overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder and four 36 mm Keihin carburetors. In unrestricted factory specification it produced up to 137 PS at 10,000 rpm and 103 Nm at 9,000 rpm, with power transmitted through a six-speed gearbox and chain final drive.

Performance was exceptional for its time. In a 1988 comparison, Cycle World described the ZX-10 as the most powerful stock motorcycle it had tested, while a later retrospective recorded a 165 mph top speed and a 10.76-second quarter mile. The bike combined that performance with a relatively practical road-going layout, which period testers regarded as more versatile than the increasingly specialized race-replica machines appearing at the same time.

The ZX-10's engine and chassis became the foundation for Kawasaki's next major step. For 1990, Kawasaki introduced the ZX-11, or ZZ-R1100 in other markets, as the next-generation flagship. The new model developed the ZX-10 concept further with increased displacement, ram-air induction and substantially greater performance. Cycle World recorded 176 mph from the ZX-11, ending the ZX-10's brief but significant period at the top of Kawasaki's performance range.
