About the Kawasaki Classic

Kawasaki introduced the Vulcan 1500 Classic in 1996 as a more traditionally styled version of its large V-twin cruiser. The design grew out of customer response to a customized Vulcan shown at Daytona Bike Week, with riders asking Kawasaki for a simpler, lower motorcycle with classic American cruiser styling. The production model combined that appearance with a newly developed steel chassis and the established liquid-cooled Vulcan V-twin.

The first Vulcan 1500 Classic was the VN1500-D1, which Kawasaki officially lists for the 1996 model year. For 1998, the Classic moved into the VN1500-E1 generation covered by this service-manual supplement. Kawasaki's current factory records still identify the 1998 E1 as a Vulcan 1500 Classic.

The carbureted Classic used a 1,470 cc liquid-cooled SOHC V-twin fed by a single 40 mm Keihin carburetor. Power was transmitted through a five-speed gearbox and shaft final drive. A low 700 mm seat, 16-inch spoked wheels, long wheelbase and relaxed chassis geometry reflected the motorcycle's emphasis on low-speed stability and long-distance cruiser comfort.

Kawasaki continued refining the carbureted Classic through the E-series, culminating in the VN1500-E7 for 2004. Kawasaki's factory parts records confirm that the 2004 E7 remained carbureted.

From 2000, Kawasaki also offered the separate Vulcan 1500 Classic Fi, using the VN1500-N model code and electronic fuel injection. The original carbureted Classic continued alongside it, which is why distinguishing between the two versions is important when choosing service information.
