About the Moto Guzzi Stelvio

Moto Guzzi introduced the original Stelvio 1200 as its distinctive entry into the large adventure-touring class. First revealed at EICMA in November 2007 and presented to the international press in March 2008, it was named for the winding Stelvio Pass in the Italian Alps. Its transverse V-twin engine, shaft final drive, tall riding position and prominent twin-headlight front end blended familiar Moto Guzzi mechanical identity with the requirements of long-distance motorcycle travel. The manufacturer's historical review confirms the original launch and the wider role it played in renewing the Mandello del Lario range.

The original range evolved during the following years. The NTX joined the line in 2009, offering a more expedition-oriented equipment package and introducing ABS into the marque's maxi-enduro family. At EICMA in 2010 Moto Guzzi showed revised eight-valve touring models, launched in spring 2011. The updated Stelvio and NTX gained revised bodywork, enhanced wind protection and a substantially larger 32-litre fuel tank. These motorcycles remained built around a 1,151 cc air-and-oil-cooled V-twin with six-speed transmission and CARC shaft drive. They established the Stelvio name as an Italian adventure-tourer designed to combine long-distance comfort with traditional transverse-twin character.

Following the departure of the earlier Stelvio 1200, a new engine architecture created the opportunity for its revival. Moto Guzzi unveiled the V100 Mandello in 2022, introducing the Compact Block 1,042 cc liquid-cooled V-twin, developed with multiple future vehicle types in mind. The new twin retained a 90-degree transverse layout while adopting dual overhead camshafts, revised cylinder-head orientation, a wet multi-plate clutch and a much more compact drivetrain than the older big-block motorcycles. The change was significant because a new adventure-oriented motorcycle could now be designed around the latest platform, rather than continue the previously established 1200 mechanical architecture.

In October 2023 Moto Guzzi previewed the successor and then presented the new Stelvio at EICMA in November for the 2024 range. The company deliberately used the historic model name without the old 1200 or NTX suffix. Powered by the V100-derived 1,042 cc engine, the new machine employed an adventure-focused chassis, a reinforced single-sided cardan swingarm and a 19-inch front wheel. Aerodynamics and rider protection received careful development, while the windscreen could be adjusted electrically. A 20.2-litre fuel tank and modern frame architecture replaced the earlier Stelvio's bulkier touring proportions. The official EICMA presentation sets out the new motorcycle's engineering and design aims.

The 2024 production model consolidated the identity of a modern liquid-cooled adventure-tourer. Rider aids included selectable riding modes, cruise control, advanced traction management and cornering ABS, with the optional PFF Rider Assistance Solution adding radar-based features such as following cruise control, front collision warning and blind-spot information. The 1,042 cc transverse twin and shaft drive maintained a recognizable Moto Guzzi signature, but liquid cooling, ride-by-wire, electronic management and the newer chassis clearly distinguished this machine from the original air-and-oil-cooled Stelvio 1200. The manufacturer's February 2024 introduction documents the revised architecture and technology. Earlier editions are also listed in the Moto Guzzi manual catalog.
