About the Moto Guzzi V11

Moto Guzzi developed the V11 at the end of the 1990s as the next expression of its sporting big-block roadster line. It followed the Sport 1100 and Centauro era while deliberately reconnecting the company with the compact proportions and visual attitude of the 1970s V7 Sport and Le Mans. Period testing in 1999 described the new V11 Sport as Moto Guzzi’s flagship and a modern café racer, combining the traditional transverse 90-degree V-twin and shaft drive with a new six-speed gearbox, revised frame geometry, wide 17-inch wheels and contemporary Brembo brakes. Moto Guzzi’s own historical overview places the V11 Sport series alongside the California and Nevada as part of the marque’s late-1990s revival. See the official Moto Guzzi historical overview.

The V11 Sport established the basic platform: a 1064 cc air-cooled pushrod V-twin, electronic fuel injection, six-speed transmission and cardan shaft final drive in a rectangular-section steel frame. Contemporary road tests emphasized that the six-speed transmission and revised chassis made the motorcycle feel markedly more modern than the earlier Sport 1100 while retaining the torque, mechanical character and distinctive layout associated with Mandello. In that sense, the V11 became a big-block Italian shaft-drive sport roadster rather than an attempt to imitate high-revving multi-cylinder superbikes.

The family broadened quickly. The V11 Le Mans arrived for the 2002 model year, adding a frame-mounted half fairing and changes intended to improve high-speed stability and long-distance comfort while retaining the V11 engine and drivetrain. The Le Mans name connected the new model to Moto Guzzi’s historic sporting lineage, but its ergonomics and wind protection gave it a stronger sport-touring role than the naked Sport. Period coverage also documented chassis revisions, a longer wheelbase and a wider rear wheel compared with the earliest V11 Sport.

By 2003 the V11 platform had become a family of distinct versions. Sport and Le Mans continued as the core naked and faired models, while Rosso Corsa and Café Sport added more exclusive suspension and styling treatments. The Ballabio moved in a streetfighter direction with a wide tubular handlebar and small frame-mounted fairing; contemporary testing noted that it was named after the Ballabio-Resinelli hillclimb near Moto Guzzi’s home territory. The 2003 specification also brought detailed variant differences in Marzocchi and Öhlins suspension, riding position and bodywork while preserving the shared 1064 cc engine, six-speed gearbox and shaft-drive architecture.

The V11 remained in production into the mid-2000s, closing an important chapter in Moto Guzzi’s traditional big-block sporting line just as the company entered the Piaggio era in late 2004 and shifted toward newer platforms such as the Breva 1100 and Griso 1100. This 2003 workshop publication covers V11 Sport, V11 Le Mans, Rosso Corsa, Café Sport and Ballabio variants. Related documentation is grouped in the Moto Guzzi V11 catalog.
