About the Suzuki XF650

Suzuki introduced the Freewind as a road-oriented middleweight built around a large single-cylinder engine and long-travel chassis. Within the factory material, the original 1997 machine is identified as the XF650V, followed by dedicated update sections for the 1998-1999 W/UW/X/UX variants, the 2000 Y model and the 2001 K1 model. The layout, 19-inch front wheel, upright ergonomics and adjustable ride-height provisions place the bike between a conventional road motorcycle and a more off-road-focused dual-purpose machine. A model-year archive for the Freewind also documents its 1997 introduction and annual Suzuki model codes: Suzuki XF650 Freewind model history.

The XF650 uses a 644 cm³ four-stroke OHC single-cylinder engine with a 100 × 82 mm bore and stroke and a 9.5:1 compression ratio. The original factory specifications describe the engine as air-cooled with SACS and fed by twin Mikuni BSR32 carburetors. Later factory supplements list BSR32SS carburetors while retaining the same displacement, bore and stroke and compression ratio. Power is transmitted through a wet multi-plate clutch, five-speed constant-mesh transmission and chain final drive with a 43/15 final reduction ratio.

The chassis reflects the Freewind's touring and mixed-road emphasis. Base factory specifications list a 1,465 mm wheelbase, 830 mm standard seat height and a 162 kg dry mass, with a factory low-seat configuration reducing seat height to 800 mm. The motorcycle uses a 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheel, disc brakes at both ends, telescopic front suspension and a link-type rear suspension. These dimensions and the large-capacity single-cylinder engine define the Freewind as a 644cc single-cylinder adventure motorcycle aimed at everyday road use, touring and light unpaved-road capability rather than competition off-road riding.

The factory supplements show an evolutionary model cycle rather than a complete redesign during the years covered here. The 1998-1999 W/UW/X/UX section retains the core 644 cm³ specification. The 2000 XF650Y supplement records a 168 kg dry mass and BSR32SS carburetors, and the 2001 XF650K1 specification continues the same 644 cm³, 9.5:1, five-speed platform. This continuity is useful when tracing service differences because the base manual remains the foundation while the later sections document model-year changes. For broader manufacturer context, see Suzuki's official corporate history. Related publications are organized in the Suzuki XF650 manual catalog.

This listing covers the factory service information contained in the attached compilation for XF650V (1997), XF650W/UW/X/UX (1998-1999), XF650Y (2000) and XF650K1 (2001). The uploaded PDF contains 349 pages. Its scanned factory pages are printable but do not provide a usable searchable text layer, so it is classified as non-searchable.
