About the Malaguti F12 and Phantom

Malaguti introduced the Phantom F12 at the Milan motorcycle show in late 1993, with the scooter reaching dealers in 1994. It arrived during a period when the European 50 cc scooter market was becoming much more competitive, and Malaguti gave the new model a deliberately aggressive identity with fighter-aircraft-inspired bodywork and twin front lamps. Contemporary retrospective coverage places the F12 alongside rivals such as the Aprilia SR, Piaggio Zip and Yamaha Aerox, while later Malaguti material still describes the Phantom as an iconic model within the brand’s history. The official Malaguti Phantom feature reflects the model’s lasting status among owners.

The first generation was sold in both air-cooled and liquid-cooled forms. Historical parts documentation identifies the 1994-1998 air-cooled version with ZJM40 frame coding and the liquid-cooled version with ZJM41 coding. Both remained compact 50 cc two-stroke scooters built around Minarelli power units and automatic CVT transmission. The factory specifications in this manual list 49-49.3 cm³ displacement, a 40 × 39.2 mm bore and stroke, 12:1 compression, separate automatic oil metering, a dry centrifugal clutch and 13-inch-scale compact scooter proportions. The chassis used a single tubular-steel backbone splitting around the footboard, with a 32 mm hydraulic fork and a 190 mm hydraulic front disc.

By 1998 the F12 had evolved beyond the earliest configuration. Malaguti documentation for this period covers both the standard and liquid-cooled machines and also provides procedures for the optional rear hydraulic disc. Period application and parts records distinguish a 1998 liquid-cooled twin-disc version from the earlier single-rear-brake arrangement. This gave the Phantom a more performance-oriented specification while preserving the same compact basic platform. The factory manual also documents different carburetor applications, including TK, Dell’Orto PHVA and Gurtner units depending on version, together with separate air- and liquid-cooled engine configurations. In this form the F12 was a particularly representative 1990s Italian 50cc sport scooter.

The model continued to change after this early generation. Historical Malaguti parts records separate the 1999 catalytic air-cooled and liquid-cooled versions from the 1994-1998 machines, followed by later Euro 1 and Euro 2 restyles in the early 2000s. The changes included revised emissions equipment, bodywork and passenger accommodation while the Phantom name remained in production. A surviving Malaguti model and parts archive documents these distinct generations and frame families, showing why later F12s should not automatically be treated as mechanically identical to the 1998 scooter.

A major generational break came for 2007, when Malaguti introduced the substantially revised F12R. Period reporting described the new machine as a facelifted and updated successor with altered bodywork, larger wheels and revised braking equipment, marking the end of the original F12 design lineage. This listing therefore focuses specifically on the 1998-generation machine documented by the factory publication. The PDF is dated 05/98 and supports the standard and liquid-cooled F12 configurations of that period; it does not establish compatibility with every later Phantom or F12R. Related factory manuals are grouped in the Malaguti F12 manual catalog.
