About the Kawasaki KZ400
The Kawasaki KZ400 documented here belongs to Kawasaki's early mid-size four-stroke twin family. The factory scan is titled “KZ Series” and dated 1974, with a first revision dated July 15, 1974. Kawasaki's official 1974 KZ400 parts catalog identifies major assemblies as shared across “'74-'75 KZ400/KZ400D,” which supports the 1974–1975 application used for this listing. Kawasaki's corporate heritage timeline also records a KZ400 as the first motorcycle assembled at its Lincoln, Nebraska plant on January 22, 1975.
Its engine is a 398 cc air-cooled SOHC twin with a 64 × 62 mm bore and stroke and a 9.0:1 compression ratio. The manual specifies two Keihin CVB36 carburetors, wet-sump forced lubrication, electric and kick starting, and battery-and-coil ignition. Factory output is listed as 35 hp at 8,500 rpm with maximum torque of 3.17 kg-m at 7,500 rpm. Drive is through a wet multi-disc clutch and a five-speed constant-mesh return-shift transmission, with a 3.000 final reduction ratio.
The chassis is a tubular double-cradle design with an 18-inch front and rear wheel setup, telescopic front fork and swing-arm rear suspension. The manual lists 135 mm of front suspension stroke and 80 mm at the rear, a front disc brake with a 277 mm disc, and an internal-expansion leading-trailing rear drum. Other factory figures include a 1,360 mm wheelbase, 170 kg dry weight and 14 L fuel capacity. Electrical equipment includes a 12 V 12 Ah battery and a conventional generator, regulator and battery-and-coil ignition system.
The publication is organized differently from later Kawasaki workshop manuals: after specifications and performance curves, it moves through Adjustment, Disassembly, Maintenance & Theory of Operation, and an Appendix containing periodic maintenance, torque data, troubleshooting and the wiring diagram. See Kawasaki's official 1974 KZ400 Owner Center parts catalog for the factory '74-'75 KZ400/KZ400D parts application, and browse the Kawasaki KZ400 manual category for related documentation.
