About the Kawasaki CE / DE / FE

Kawasaki's KX motocross line reaches back to 1973, and the company's official KX overview describes the family as competition machinery built around a long-running "Built to Win" philosophy. For 2014, the KX85, KX85-II and KX100 formed a stepped youth and supermini range for riders progressing toward full-size motocross bikes. Contemporary 2014 first-look coverage described a major refresh rather than a cosmetic update, with Kawasaki claiming substantially more KX85 power along with revised power-valve hardware, suspension, bodywork and rider ergonomics.

The shared foundation is a liquid-cooled two-stroke motocross platform. The KX85CE and KX85DE use an 84 cc piston-reed-valve single with a 48.5 × 45.8 mm bore and stroke, while the KX100FE increases bore to 52.5 mm for 99 cc. All three use a Keihin PWK28 carburetor, Kawasaki's KIPS exhaust power-valve system, digital CDI ignition, 32:1 petrol/oil premix, a wet multi-disc clutch, six-speed constant-mesh gearbox and chain final drive. The smaller CE configuration runs 17-inch front and 14-inch rear wheels, while the DE and FE use the larger 19/16-inch combination, giving Kawasaki closely related machines for different rider sizes and racing classes.

The chassis remains focused on closed-course competition. The 2014 machines use a tubular semi-double-cradle frame, inverted front fork and Uni-Trak rear suspension, with 275 mm of wheel travel at both ends and disc brakes front and rear. The service schedule is correspondingly intensive: Kawasaki specifies checks in race and operating-hour intervals rather than ordinary road-mileage periods, including frequent attention to the piston, rings, exhaust valves, air filter, chain, suspension and transmission oil. The manual's detailed KIPS procedures are particularly relevant because exhaust-valve condition directly affects the broad two-stroke power delivery that distinguishes this generation.

The 2014 redesign became the basis for a long-running small-bore KX family, but Kawasaki continued revising the supporting service literature as the motorcycles evolved. By 2022, Kawasaki's Owner Center pairs the KX85C and newer KX112A with service-manual revision 99924-1470-14, while the 2022 KX112 shows how the larger-wheel supermini side of the range progressed to 112 cc while retaining a two-stroke KIPS engine, 28 mm carburetor, six-speed transmission and 19/16-inch wheels. That later continuity is useful model-history context, but it is not evidence that the first 2013 publication includes all subsequent component or procedure revisions.

This download is specifically factory publication 99924-1470-01, First Edition dated May 17, 2013. Its Model Application table lists only 2014 KX85CE, KX85DE and KX100FE, so the catalog range has been corrected from the old 2014-2021 claim to 2014 only. Related two-stroke Kawasaki motocross manuals can be browsed in the KX85 service manual category; owners of later model years should match the motorcycle to the appropriate later manual revision rather than assuming complete interchangeability.
