About the Kawasaki KX450F
Kawasaki launched the KX450F for the 2006 model year as its new premier four-stroke motocross machine. Kawasaki Heavy Industries' 2006 annual report specifically identifies the KX450F as the first four-stroke engine model in its class for Kawasaki. It was built for closed-course competition rather than dual-purpose or trail use, placing a high-output large-bore single in the KX racing line at a time when four-stroke 450s had become central to top-level motocross. Kawasaki later used the KX450F as the performance basis for the KLX450R enduro model, reinforcing the KX platform's role as the race-focused starting point.
The first-generation KX450D is a 449 cc four-stroke motocross bike built around a liquid-cooled DOHC four-valve single with a 96.0 × 62.1 mm bore and stroke, 12.0:1 compression and a Keihin FCR40 flat-slide carburetor. Starting is by kickstarter and ignition by digital AC-CDI. The chassis uses a tubular semi-double-cradle frame, 21-inch front and 19-inch rear wheels, long-travel inverted forks and Kawasaki's Uni-Trak rear suspension. The factory maintenance schedule is explicitly race-hour based, with frequent checks of the air filter, valve clearance, piston, crankshaft, chain, brakes and suspension, reflecting the KX450F's competition-only duty cycle rather than normal road-bike service intervals.
The 2006–2008 D-series evolved materially without leaving the same basic platform. The 2006 KX450D6F uses a four-speed constant-mesh gearbox, while the 2007 KX450D7F and 2008 KX450D8F moved to five speeds. Kawasaki also revised valve timing from 2007 onward, and the 2008 D8F receives its own front-fork oil procedure and several model-specific lubrication and engine details. Those distinctions matter because the three years are closely related but not mechanically identical; this factory manual explicitly separates D6F, D7F and D8F specifications where procedures or settings differ.
A clear generation break arrived for 2009 with the KX450E-series. Kawasaki's official 2009 KX450F parts record shows an electronic fuel-injection system and the new KX450E9FA model code, replacing the carbureted D-series architecture documented here. Later KX450 development continued to add race-derived electronic controls and major chassis changes, but the 2006–2008 motorcycles remain the original KX450F generation.
This download is specifically factory publication 99924-1355-03 and its application table covers 2006 KX450D6F, 2007 KX450D7F and 2008 KX450D8F. The old 2005–2008 catalog range has therefore been corrected to 2006–2008. Other Kawasaki motocross manuals can be browsed in the KX450F service manual category.
