About the Kawasaki ZX6R

The 2013 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R (ZX6R) marked the return of the 636 cm³ engine to Kawasaki's middleweight supersport line. Kawasaki's official 2013-model announcement described the displacement increase from 599 to 636 cm³ as a way to improve performance across the rev range while broadening real-world usability beyond the circuit. The same redesign introduced SFF-BP front suspension, an Assist & Slipper clutch, Kawasaki Traction Control and, on the ABS model, Kawasaki Intelligent anti-lock Brake System. The result was a supersport platform intended to retain track-focused handling while being more flexible on winding roads and in everyday riding.

The engine is a 636 cc supersport inline-four, liquid-cooled and DOHC, with a 67.0 × 45.1 mm bore and stroke and 12.9:1 compression ratio. Fuel is delivered through four Keihin TTK38 throttle bodies. The factory manual lists 96.4 kW (131 PS) at 13,500 rpm and 71 N·m at 11,500 rpm for the principal full-power specification, with different or omitted output figures for some markets. Valve clearance is shim-adjusted at 0.13–0.19 mm intake and 0.24–0.31 mm exhaust. Total engine-oil capacity is 3.6 L when completely dry.

Power passes through a wet multi-disc clutch and six-speed constant-mesh return-shift transmission to a chain final drive with a 2.688 reduction ratio. The tubular diamond chassis uses a 1,395 mm wheelbase, 23.5-degree rake and 101 mm trail. Factory specifications list 120/70 ZR17 front and 180/55 ZR17 rear tubeless tires, a 120 mm upside-down fork and 134 mm Uni-Trak rear suspension travel. Curb mass is listed as 192 kg for ZX636ED and 194 kg for ZX636FD, with a 17 L fuel tank and 830 mm seat height. Dual front discs and a single rear disc provide braking, with KIBS hardware and diagnostics documented for the ABS-equipped FD model.

Kawasaki's official 2013 model announcement documents the 636 cm³ engine, SFF-BP suspension, traction control, Assist & Slipper clutch and KIBS technology, while the 2013 Ninja ZX-6R Owner Center confirms the ZX636ED model family. The uploaded service manual is the first edition dated July 25, 2012 and its Model Application page lists only 2013 ZX636ED and ZX636FD under part number 99924-1462-01. Later Kawasaki revisions of the same manual family expanded compatibility, but this specific source revision does not list 2014–2018 applications.
