About the Suzuki DL650

Suzuki introduced the DL650 V-Strom as a 2004 model, extending the V-Strom concept into the middleweight class after the larger V-Strom 1000. Suzuki's official digital archive describes the 650 as a mid-class sport adventure tourer developed to combine sportiness with long-distance touring ability. The original package used a large 22-liter fuel tank, standard rear carrier, 820 mm seat height and a three-position windscreen to make the motorcycle useful for commuting as well as highway travel. See Suzuki's official V-Strom 650 historical archive.

The first-generation 650 is built around a 645 cm³ liquid-cooled 90-degree V-twin with double overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder. Factory specifications give an 81.0 × 62.6 mm bore and stroke and an 11.5:1 compression ratio. Electronic fuel injection feeds the engine, while a wet multi-plate clutch and six-speed constant-mesh gearbox transmit power to the rear wheel through chain final drive. The compact V-twin layout, broad power delivery and upright ergonomics made the bike a practical mid-size V-twin adventure tourer rather than a narrowly focused off-road machine.

The chassis combines a twin-beam aluminum frame with 19-inch front and 17-inch rear radial tyres, twin front disc brakes, a 1,540 mm wheelbase and 150 mm of suspension travel at both ends. The 2004 specification also lists a dry mass of about 190 kg and a 22-liter fuel capacity. Those dimensions reflect the model's intended balance: more road-oriented and manageable than a large adventure-tourer, but with enough wind protection, fuel range, luggage provision and suspension travel for extended touring.

The 2004 model established the first-generation V-Strom 650 platform that continued through the following years with incremental revisions. A clear generation break came with Suzuki's 2011 announcement of the redesigned 2012 V-Strom 650 ABS. Suzuki described that machine as a full model change with revised bodywork and wind protection, a refined low-to-midrange engine character, reduced weight and standard ABS. That factory announcement is useful for separating the original platform from the later generation. See Suzuki's 2011 V-Strom 650 ABS launch release.

For related documentation, browse the Suzuki V-Strom DL650 category. This listing is specifically based on service-manual part number 99500-36130-03E. The source identifies the motorcycle as DL650K4 ('04-MODEL) and is copyrighted 2003 in preparation for the 2004 model year. Because this PDF contains no later K5-K11 supplement chapters, its verified catalog applicability is limited to 2004 rather than the broader 2004-2011 range previously assigned to the product.
