About the Kawasaki Vaquero and Voyager Custom
Kawasaki introduced the Vulcan 1700 Vaquero for the 2011 model year as the bagger-style branch of its large VN1700 touring-cruiser family. Kawasaki's official 2011 Owner Center record confirms the first-year VN1700J model, while the closely related VN1700 Voyager Custom ABS appears in the same factory platform documentation. The Vaquero's identity centers on custom-bagger styling, a fixed front fairing, integrated hard luggage and a lower, more streamlined touring profile than the full-dress Voyager, while retaining the long-distance chassis and big-engine character of the broader Vulcan 1700 family.
The platform is built around a 1,700 cc V-twin bagger powertrain. The liquid-cooled SOHC engine uses a 102 × 104 mm bore and stroke, 9.5:1 compression and electronic fuel injection through twin 42 mm throttle bodies, driving through a six-speed gearbox and belt final drive. The steel double-cradle chassis uses a 30-degree rake, 16-inch wheels, dual front discs and twin rear shocks. K-series machines add Kawasaki's K-ACT ABS linked-braking technology, while the electronic throttle system also supports cruise-control functions. This combination of large-displacement V-twin torque, belt drive, hard luggage and integrated electronics gives the Vaquero a very different mechanical and riding character from Kawasaki's lighter sport and adventure models.
The Vaquero has had an unusually long production life without abandoning its core mechanical formula. Kawasaki's official 2026 Vulcan 1700 Vaquero ABS page still lists a 1,700 cc 52-degree V-twin, 102 × 104 mm bore and stroke, 9.5:1 compression, six-speed transmission, carbon-fiber-reinforced belt final drive, electronic cruise control and K-ACT ABS. The factory model codes evolved from 2011 VN1700JB/KB and 2012 VN1700JC/KC to later J/K-series codes, but the continuing engine dimensions and drivetrain layout show why owners often research the Vaquero as one long-running VN1700 platform rather than a sequence of completely unrelated generations.
For service work, the exact model year and VN1700J/K code still matter because electronics, emissions equipment, trim and detailed components can change over a long production run. The full-dress touring sibling is covered separately in our Vulcan 1700 Voyager service manual, while the VN1700 manual category groups related Kawasaki touring-cruiser service information. This factory service manual is therefore best treated as core information for the Vaquero / Voyager Custom VN1700J/K platform, with later-year compatibility checked against the specific motorcycle rather than assumed solely from the shared 1,700 cc architecture.
