About the Kawasaki Voyager

Kawasaki introduced the Vulcan 1700 Voyager / Voyager ABS for the 2009 model year as the full-dress touring branch of the VN1700 family. Kawasaki's official 2009 Voyager record identifies the VN1700A9F model, while the related B-series added Kawasaki's linked anti-lock braking system. The Voyager was aimed at long-distance road use rather than stripped-back cruising, combining the low-speed character of a large V-twin with touring-oriented bodywork, substantial luggage capacity and a chassis designed to remain composed with passenger and load.

At the center of the platform is a 1,700 cc V-twin touring cruiser powertrain. The liquid-cooled 52-degree SOHC V-twin uses a 102 × 104 mm bore and stroke, 9.5:1 compression and electronic fuel injection through twin 42 mm throttle bodies, paired with a six-speed transmission and belt final drive. ABS-equipped B-series machines use K-ACT, Kawasaki Advanced Coactive-Braking Technology, which links front and rear braking while retaining anti-lock control. The combination of large displacement, belt drive and overdrive-oriented six-speed gearing gives the Voyager a different mechanical character from Kawasaki's lighter middleweights: relaxed engine speed, strong low-rpm torque and long-distance comfort are central to the design.

The unusual feature of the Voyager story is its longevity. Kawasaki's official 2025 Vulcan 1700 Voyager ABS specification still lists the same 1,700 cc displacement, 102 × 104 mm bore and stroke, 9.5:1 compression ratio, six-speed transmission and carbon-fiber-reinforced belt final drive, along with K-ACT ABS and electronic cruise control. The wider VN1700 family also includes the bagger-style Vaquero, which shares the same broad large-V-twin platform while using different touring bodywork and equipment. That long production run makes model-year identification important because emissions hardware, electronics, trim and detail parts can change even when the core engine and drivetrain architecture remain familiar.

For service information, the VN1700A/B model code remains more useful than the marketing name alone. Related bagger coverage is available in our VN1700 Vaquero / Voyager Custom coverage, and the VN1700 catalog groups other manuals from the same platform family. This service manual is best treated as factory information for the Voyager/Voyager ABS VN1700A/B platform, with later-year procedures and components checked against the exact motorcycle year and market rather than assuming every detail stayed unchanged throughout 2009–2025.
