About the Kawasaki KLX110 and KLX110L

Kawasaki launched the original KLX110 in late 2001 as a small four-stroke trail motorcycle for younger and less-experienced off-road riders. Its upright riding position, manageable engine output, compact wheels and motocross-inspired styling were intended to make family off-road riding accessible. Rather than using the peaky delivery of a competition two-stroke, the initial machine had a 111 cc air-cooled single-cylinder engine, a three-speed gearbox and an automatic centrifugal clutch, allowing the rider to change gear without operating a handlebar clutch lever. Kawasaki's original 2001 launch announcement emphasized this easy-to-operate character and the link to the company's larger KX motocross machines.

The early KLX110 became popular not only with children learning to ride but also with adults interested in compact trail motorcycles and informal mini-moto riding. Its backbone frame, 14-inch front wheel, 12-inch rear wheel, low seat and predictable drum brakes were well suited to practice areas and recreational off-road tracks. Although styling and equipment evolved through the 2000s, the model retained the basic appeal of an uncomplicated carbureted, air-cooled engine with robust mechanical controls. The compact platform also created demand for a taller, more rider-involved version as customers gained confidence. The next major change to the family arrived for the 2010 model year, when Kawasaki substantially modernized both the engine and the riding experience.

For 2010, the redesigned KLX110 KLX110L gained electric starting alongside the existing kickstarter, a four-speed transmission in place of the original three-speed, revised cam timing and an improved exhaust. The four-stroke engine retained a 53.0 mm bore and 50.6 mm stroke, while its broader torque delivery, revised ergonomics and KX-inspired bodywork gave the motorcycle a fresh appearance. Kawasaki kept the semi-automatic centrifugal clutch on the standard model, preserving easy clutch-free starts and stops. New electronic ignition, low-tension piston rings and altered chassis details formed part of the update. Contemporary coverage in Dirt Bike Magazine's 2010 model introduction describes the redesigned range and the key technical changes.

Alongside that update, Kawasaki introduced the new KLX110L to suit taller riders or those seeking more direct control. It shared the 112 cc class SOHC engine and four-speed gearbox but adopted a hand-operated wet multi-plate clutch, longer-travel suspension and a taller 730 mm seat instead of the standard model's 680 mm seat. Its front wheel travel grew to 140 mm, compared with 110 mm on the standard model, while rear wheel travel measured 132 mm versus 110 mm. The two machines therefore offered genuinely different riding experiences within the same small-displacement four-stroke off-road motorcycle family. A contemporary Cycle World KLX110L review confirmed the new model's manual clutch, higher seating position and longer suspension travel.

From 2010 through 2014, the KLX110C and KLX110D lines retained their separate semi-automatic and manual-clutch identities. Kawasaki's model codes advanced from CA and DA for 2010 through CE and DE for 2014, corresponding to annual versions of the two motorcycles. Their core engine architecture remained carbureted and air-cooled, with the same backbone-frame layout, 14-/12-inch wheels and drum brakes, although Kawasaki revised certain year-dependent parts and fuel-tank specifications. The model's enduring role was as a practical, approachable off-road motorcycle rather than a full-size competition motocrosser. The manufacturer's 2013 fifth-edition service publication lists every model year from 2010 through 2014 and illustrates the distinct mechanical systems of each variant. Other factory publications are available in the Kawasaki service manual catalog.
