The motorcycles themselves tell a more interesting story.

American and Japanese cruisers cannot be separated neatly by reliability, engine design, weight or even where they were built. That final point is important. “American” and “Japanese” describe brands and design traditions. They are poor substitutes for actual mechanical specifications.

1. A Japanese Cruiser Can Be More American Than You Think

The Honda Valkyrie is one of the best examples of why the traditional American-versus-Japanese distinction becomes complicated.

Its factory service manual also shows a very different maintenance architecture from the shaft-driven Valkyrie. The Vulcan S has a chain final drive, along with dedicated inspection and service procedures for its fuel-injection, suspension, electrical and ABS systems.

Suzuki adds another variation. Its current Boulevard range includes traditional-looking V-twin cruisers while the large M109R takes a much more muscular, performance-oriented approach.

And Yamaha’s V-Star family has included belt-driven V-twin cruisers such as the V-Star 950.

So when somebody says Japanese cruisers are more reliable, lighter, simpler or easier to maintain, the obvious follow-up question should be:

3. American Cruisers Are More Technically Diverse Than the Stereotype Suggests

American motorcycles are frequently reduced to another stereotype: large, old-fashioned, air-cooled V-twins.

There is a historical reason for that image. Harley-Davidson has built much of its identity around the V-twin, and the configuration has been part of the company’s production history since the early twentieth century.

But contemporary American cruisers are not engineering time capsules.

But saying Japanese cruisers “cannot be customized” goes too far.

    But buying one still raises questions that rarely come up with a conventional motorcycle.

    How far will it actually go? How long does charging take? What happens when the battery gets old? Are electric motorcycles cheaper to maintain? Can you tour on one? And what exactly needs servicing when there is no engine oil, fuel system or exhaust?

    The short answer is this:

    Electric motorcycles can work very well for commuting, urban riding and shorter recreational trips when charging is easy to access. They require less conventional engine maintenance, but range, charging speed, battery condition and electronic systems become much more important parts of ownership.

    The biggest ownership difference is not simply that electricity replaces gasoline.

    Why does highway riding reduce electric motorcycle range?

    Aerodynamic drag rises rapidly as speed increases.

    At lower urban speeds, the motorcycle requires relatively little energy simply to push through the air. Stop-and-go riding can also allow regenerative braking to recover some energy.

    At sustained highway speeds, much more energy is required to overcome aerodynamic resistance.

    That is why a motorcycle capable of more than 150 miles in city testing may deliver considerably less during continuous highway riding.

    Which range number should you use?

    Use the figure that most closely matches the way you ride.

    If you commute mainly through a city, city range is useful.

    The answer depends on the motorcycle’s battery, onboard charger and charging system.

    Level 1 charging

    Level 1 usually means charging from a normal household outlet in markets such as North America.

    It is convenient but relatively slow.
