Hyosung began motorcycle production in 1978 through a technical relationship with Suzuki and moved into independently developed models during the following decade. Hyosung's own corporate history says the company established its motorcycle business in 1978, worked with Suzuki technology, opened a technical research institute in 1986 and began mass-producing independently developed products in 1987. That background is important to the Prima because the scooter belongs to the period when Hyosung was expanding its own small-displacement commuter range rather than relying only on earlier licensed designs. Its design was centered on compact urban transport. The factory specification gives an 88 kg dry mass, 1,825 mm overall length, 1,270 mm wheelbase and 12-inch wheels, with a dual-seat scooter layout, automatic transmission and electric starting intended to make daily riding simple rather than sporting.

The SF50 used a 49 cm³ forced-air-cooled two-stroke single with reed-valve induction, a 41 × 37.4 mm bore and stroke and a 7.4:1 corrected compression ratio. A 14 mm VM14 piston-valve carburetor fed the engine, while automatic oil injection eliminated the need for premixing fuel. Power passed through a dry centrifugal clutch and variable-ratio V-belt transmission, with both electric and kick starting available. The chassis combined a telescopic fork, rear coil-spring suspension, 110/70-12 front and 120/70-12 rear tires, a front disc and rear drum brake. These features place it squarely in the 49 cc two-stroke urban scooter class of the late 1990s.

The Prima/SF50 identity continued in export markets after the original publication. Australian RedBook records list Prima 50 SF50 models from 2002 through 2006, and later 2006-2008 references still describe a 49 cm³ air-cooled two-stroke with CVT, 110/70-12 and 120/70-12 tires, front disc brake and approximately 88 kg weight. RedBook's Australian model records show that later market presence, while the continuing core specification suggests evolutionary development rather than a completely unrelated model. Those later records do not, however, prove that every later SF50 shares the 1999 service procedures unchanged.
