About the Hyosung GF125

Hyosung developed the GF125 in 1997 as part of the company's shift from earlier licensed production toward motorcycles engineered around its own small-displacement four-stroke platforms. Motorrad's company chronology places development of the GF125 in 1997, following Hyosung's earlier Cruise 125 models and before the RX125 and later Aquila V-twins. That timing makes the GF an important bridge between Hyosung's early commuter motorcycles and the more ambitious road models that followed. Motorrad's Hyosung history documents the model's place in that chronology.

The 1997 factory publication shows that this was not simply a cosmetic update. Hyosung explicitly describes the new GF 125 as an improvement over the earlier two-valve GF 125, moving to a four-valve cylinder head with narrower valve angles and revised port design to strengthen low- and mid-range response without sacrificing high-speed performance. The company also redesigned the intake, exhaust and valve-train systems to reduce noise, strengthened the engine structure to reduce vibration and changed the clutch damper from rubber to steel springs. The primary reduction ratio was revised from 3.47 to 3.50, while a digitally controlled CDI system replaced conventional ignition-timing hardware.

The resulting motorcycle was a compact four-valve 125 cc roadster built around a 124 cm³ air-cooled OHC single with a 57 × 48.8 mm bore and stroke, 9.92:1 compression, PD18F 24 mm carburetor and five-speed gearbox. Electric and kick starting were both standard. At 125 kg dry with a 1,292 mm wheelbase, 18-inch wheels, front disc brake and 13.7-litre fuel tank, the GF combined commuter practicality with more performance-oriented engineering than many basic 125s of the period.

The platform later gained a second life through Hyosung's cooperation with Kinetic Engineering in India. Business Standard reported in 2001 that Kinetic launched the GF-125 in technical collaboration with Hyosung, highlighting its four-valve 125 cc engine, electric start and front disc brake. That later production explains why the GF name continued well beyond its Korean introduction and why the model is also associated with Kinetic in some markets. Business Standard's 2001 GF-125 launch report documents that later phase, but it does not establish that every Kinetic-era machine uses this exact 1997 service specification.

This listing is therefore tied specifically to Hyosung Service Manual No. 99000-94200, marked “1st Ed. Jun. 1997.” The source covers the revised four-valve GF 125 and contains no statement of general 1998-2004 applicability. Catalog coverage is therefore conservatively limited to 1997. Related factory publications are grouped in the Hyosung GF125 manual catalog.
