Hyosung Sense SD50 Service Manual (1999)

Hyosung entered motorcycle production in 1978 and developed the business through a technical partnership with Suzuki beginning in 1979. The company later moved toward its own designs, with Hyosung's corporate history noting independent model production from 1987. By the late 1990s, that experience had expanded into small-displacement commuter motorcycles and scooters for domestic and export markets. Hyosung's own history of its motorcycle business places the Sense-era machines within that transition from licensed technology to internally developed products.

By April 1999, the factory's second-edition workshop publication described the Sense SD-50 as a new type of motorcycle and highlighted the features that defined its intended urban role: V-belt automatic transmission, forced-air cooling, electronic ignition and electric starting. Rather than using a manual gearbox and chain drive, the model was designed around scooter convenience, compact dimensions and simple operation. Its 1,780 mm overall length, 1,221 mm wheelbase, 84 kg dry mass and 10-inch wheels made it a compact 50 cc urban scooter aimed at everyday transport.

The SD50 used a 49 cm³ single-cylinder two-stroke with reed-valve induction, a 41.0 × 37.4 mm bore and stroke and a 7.4:1 corrected compression ratio. Fueling came from a 14 mm side-draft variable-venturi carburetor, while Hyosung's CCI system supplied two-stroke oil from a separate 1.2-litre tank. Power passed through a dry centrifugal automatic clutch and variable-ratio V-belt transmission, and riders had both electric and kick starting. Chassis equipment was straightforward but appropriate for city use: a telescopic front fork, swingarm rear suspension, 100/80-10 tires, a front disc brake and an internal-expanding rear drum.

The Sense name and SD50 designation continued to appear in later markets. A 2008 US-market review still described the Sense SD50 with the same basic 49 cc two-stroke layout, 41 × 37.4 mm bore and stroke, 7.4:1 compression and continuously variable transmission, showing that the model identity and core engineering concept survived well beyond the late 1990s. Those later machines should not, however, be assumed to share every service specification with the 1999 factory publication without model-year-specific evidence.

This listing is therefore tied to the dated factory source rather than the previous broad 1997-2009 catalog range. The manual is Hyosung Motors & Machinery Inc. Service Manual No. 99000-91201, explicitly marked “2nd Ed. APR. 1999,” and its foreword states that it was prepared for maintenance and repair of the SD-50.
