Kawasaki Super Sherpa KL250G/H Service Manual (1997, 1999–2007, 2009)

Kawasaki introduced the Super Sherpa in 1997 as a lightweight dual-purpose motorcycle aimed at trail, commuting and general-purpose riding rather than competition enduro use. Contemporary Japanese model-history material produced with Kawasaki Motors Japan cooperation describes the original machine as combining a relatively low seat, light chassis and strong steering lock with a more sophisticated DOHC four-valve engine than many trail-oriented rivals of the period. The factory platform appeared in both G- and H-series forms, distinguished by market and equipment details while retaining the same basic mechanical architecture.

The KL250G/H platform uses a 249 cc air-cooled four-stroke single with a 72.0 × 61.2 mm bore and stroke, 9.3:1 compression and a Mikuni BST34 carburetor. Power is delivered through a wet multi-disc clutch, six-speed constant-mesh gearbox and chain final drive. A tubular semi-double-cradle frame, 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels, long-travel telescopic fork and Uni-Trak rear suspension give the motorcycle the proportions of a lightweight 250 cc dual-sport trail bike, while electric starting and road equipment make it practical away from purely off-road use.

The early Super Sherpa was notable for its air-cooled DOHC four-valve engine, a layout derived from Kawasaki’s wider quarter-liter off-road engineering but tuned for flexible low- and mid-range use. Across the model’s life Kawasaki revised emissions equipment, electrical systems, instrumentation and market-specific details without abandoning the basic engine, chassis and six-speed drivetrain. The service manual reflects that evolution by combining the original workshop chapters with a large supplement covering changes made to 2001–2009 motorcycles.

Market availability varied significantly by country, which is why simple continuous year ranges can be misleading for this model. Kawasaki’s current U.S. service-manual listing identifies later revision 99924-1250-10 for selected Super Sherpa years including 2000–2003 and 2009, while the company’s Owner Center also records a 2010 KL250GAF for Canada. Those later records are useful lineage context but do not expand the application table printed in this earlier -09 publication.

Its Model Application table lists 1997, 1999–2007 and 2009 applications and omits 1998, 2008 and 2010, so the old continuous 1997–2010 catalog claim has been corrected accordingly.
