About the Kawasaki Classic Tourer and Nomad
The 2005 Kawasaki Vulcan 1600 touring platform is represented in this factory publication under both Nomad and Classic Tourer names, with the manual's Model Application table identifying the covered motorcycle as VN1600-D1. Kawasaki's official 2005 model announcement introduced the VN1600 Classic Tourer as a cruiser based on the VN1600 Classic with added emphasis on tandem-touring comfort, while Kawasaki's Owner Center identifies VN1600-D1 as the 2005 Vulcan 1600 Nomad in North America. The service manual itself uses both names on the cover, making this a market-naming difference within the same documented D1 application.
The motorcycle is built around a 1552 cc fuel-injected V-twin touring cruiser: a liquid-cooled, four-stroke SOHC two-cylinder engine with a 102 × 95 mm bore and stroke and 9.0:1 compression ratio. Kawasaki DFI uses a two-barrel 36 mm throttle-body assembly. Factory specifications list 49 kW (67 PS) at 4,700 rpm and 127 N·m at 2,700 rpm for applicable markets, with U.S., Canada and California output figures omitted from the manual. The engine uses hydraulic lash adjusters that maintain zero valve clearance, so routine valve-clearance inspection and adjustment are not required.
Power passes through a wet multi-disc clutch and five-speed constant-mesh return-shift transmission to a shaft final drive with a 2.619 reduction ratio. The chassis uses a tubular double-cradle frame with 32-degree rake, 184 mm trail and a 1,690 mm wheelbase. Factory specifications list 150/80-16 front and 170/70B16 rear tubeless tires, a telescopic fork with 150 mm travel and swingarm rear suspension with 99 mm travel. Braking is by dual front discs and a single rear disc. The manual also lists a 20 L fuel tank, 720 mm seat height, 350 kg dry mass, 3.5 L engine-oil capacity and 200 mL final-gear oil capacity.
Kawasaki's official 2005 model announcement documents the launch context of the VN1600 Classic Tourer, while the 2005 Vulcan 1600 Nomad Owner Center page confirms the VN1600-D1 designation. The uploaded PDF is a first-edition manual dated October 31, 2004, and its Model Application page lists only the 2005 VN1600-D1. The previous 2006–2008 tags are therefore removed.
