About the Moto Guzzi V7

Moto Guzzi revived the V7 name as a modern classic in 2008, drawing on the company’s historic V7 motorcycles of the late 1960s. The new generation adopted a compact transverse 90-degree V-twin, tubular steel chassis and shaft final drive rather than attempting a literal recreation of the original machines. Its combination of modest weight, accessible power and distinctive Italian styling made it a central part of the Mandello del Lario range. The second-generation V7 II followed with a six-speed gearbox, revised ergonomics and improved electronic safety equipment, establishing the mechanical foundation from which the third generation would develop.

For the 2017 model year, Moto Guzzi introduced the V7 III to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the original V7. The redesigned 744 cc Euro 4-compliant engine gained revised cylinder heads, pistons, combustion chambers and an updated lubrication arrangement while retaining its 80 mm bore, 74 mm stroke and pushrod-operated two-valve cylinder heads. Power rose to approximately 52 hp, with broad, accessible torque rather than a narrow high-rpm emphasis. The third generation also brought a revised chassis, updated riding position, standard two-channel ABS and adjustable MGCT traction control, modernizing the traditional shaft-driven middleweight roadster. Piaggio’s official introduction of the V7 III range describes the changes and their significance to the V7 lineage.

The original 2017 lineup comprised V7 Stone / V7 Special / V7 Racer, along with the limited-production Anniversario celebrating fifty years of the model name. Stone emphasized understated finishes and cast-alloy wheels; Special used traditional paintwork and wire-spoked wheels; and Racer introduced a café-racer stance with lower handlebars and distinctive equipment. Anniversario added commemorative detailing and premium finishes. Their common engine and frame architecture made them recognizably one family, while differences in wheels, bars, rear suspension, trim and instrumentation gave each version its own identity. A 2017 Moto Guzzi announcement details the Stone, Special, Racer and Anniversario personalities.

The range expanded in subsequent seasons with further interpretations of the third-generation Italian retro roadster. Rough, Milano and Carbon editions brought different wheels, finishes and styling themes, while the 2019 Stone Night Pack adopted a full LED lighting system and revised front and rear styling. These refinements were not simply changes of paint: LED-equipped motorcycles differed from earlier halogen versions in their lighting components and wiring layouts. In 2020 Moto Guzzi introduced the numbered Stone S and the Racer 10th Anniversary, demonstrating the longevity and versatility of the original 744 cc platform. The manufacturer’s 2020 range overview documents these special variants and the continuing evolution of the V7 III.

The V7 III occupied a clear position between the earlier V7 II and the substantially revised V7 introduced for 2021. In December 2020 Moto Guzzi announced the successor with an 853 cc engine derived from newer small-block technology, revised chassis components and the end of the Roman-numeral designation; it was not a continuation of the earlier 744 cc Euro 4 specification. This transition distinguishes the historical 2017–2020 V7 III family from later 850 cc V7 Stone and Special models. The factory V7 III ABS Service Station Manual carries a 2022 copyright update and includes procedures for halogen and LED variants, but it does not provide a definitive table of model-year applicability. Other editions are available from the Moto Guzzi manual catalog. The manufacturer’s December 2020 announcement documents the transition to the new 850 cc model.
