About the Moto Guzzi V9
Moto Guzzi unveiled the V9 family at EICMA 2015 as part of the company’s 95th-anniversary model programme. The new middleweight platform was conceived as a modern interpretation of the Mandello del Lario marque’s long-running transverse V-twin tradition, but with a new 850-class engine, a new steel frame and a more accessible custom-roadster format. Piaggio Group introduced two distinct versions from the outset: the Roamer, positioned as the more elegant and versatile custom model, and the Bobber, with a stripped-back American-inspired stance and wider tyres. The manufacturer’s EICMA 2015 announcement describes the V9 as a new 850 cc shaft-drive platform created for those two different personalities.
The first production generation reached the market for 2016 with an 853 cc 90-degree transverse V-twin using an 84 × 77 mm bore and stroke. Output was 40.44 kW (55 hp) at 6,250 rpm, with 62 Nm of torque arriving at only 3,000 rpm. A six-speed gearbox replaced the five-speed layout associated with earlier small-block Guzzis, while the traditional cardan shaft final drive remained central to the bike’s character. Marelli electronic fuel injection, dual-channel ABS and two-level Moto Guzzi traction control brought the platform firmly into the Euro 4 era. The result was a middleweight shaft-drive Italian V-twin aimed at relaxed road riding rather than outright performance.
The Roamer and Bobber shared their engine and core chassis but deliberately looked and felt different. The V9 Roamer used a 19-inch front wheel with a 100/90 tyre, a more conventional roadster-custom stance and brighter detailing. The V9 Bobber adopted a 16-inch front wheel with a much wider 130/90 tyre, darker finishes and a more compact visual profile. Both used a steel double-cradle frame, 40 mm conventional fork, twin rear shock absorbers, a 320 mm Brembo front disc and a 260 mm rear disc. Seat heights were low at roughly 785 mm for the Roamer and 780 mm for the Bobber, reinforcing the easy-going nature of both versions.
Moto Guzzi began refining the platform almost immediately. For model year 2017, Piaggio Group announced revised riding positions, more comfortable saddles and clearer differentiation between the touring-oriented Roamer and the sportier Bobber, while retaining the 853 cc Euro 4 engine. The family later expanded with derivatives such as the Bobber Sport. A larger technical step arrived with the Euro 5 generation, when the V9 adopted a more powerful evolution of the 853 cc engine rated at 65 CV and 73 Nm, together with additional chassis and equipment changes. Those later developments are useful for understanding the V9 lineage, but they also mark meaningful differences from the original 2016 specification.
This product covers the original 2016 V9 Roamer and V9 Bobber factory service information rather than the later revised generations. Related Moto Guzzi workshop publications can be found in the Moto Guzzi V9 service manual catalog.
