Suzuki introduced the GSX1400 in 2001 as a large-displacement naked roadster built around a newly developed oil-cooled inline-four. The chassis follows the classic big-roadster formula with a 1,520 mm wheelbase, 17-inch radial tires, twin front brake discs and conventional twin rear shocks. Factory specifications list a 228 kg dry mass and a 22-litre fuel tank. Combined with the broad torque characteristics of the large inline-four, these features define the machine as a fuel-injected 1400cc naked motorcycle intended for strong real-world road performance rather than supersport-style peak-rpm riding.

The GSX1400's introduction also marked Suzuki's continued development of large SACS-cooled road engines after earlier Bandit and GSX models.
