Yamaha V-Star 650 / XVS650 / DragStar Service Manual (1998)

Yamaha developed the XVS650 as a new middleweight cruiser built around the low-and-long proportions that became central to the Drag Star family. Yamaha introduced the 649 cc machine to Europe as a 1997 model after showing it at IFMA '96, describing it as a new cruiser that enlarged the proven XV535 V-twin concept and installed it in a longer, lower chassis. The engine is a 649 cm³ air-cooled 70-degree V-twin with single overhead camshafts, an 81 × 63 mm bore and stroke and a 9.0:1 compression ratio. Twin Mikuni BDS28 carburetors supply the engine, while a wet multi-disc clutch and five-speed constant-mesh gearbox send power through an enclosed shaft final drive. Yamaha's period material emphasized the engine's pulse character and low-speed torque rather than outright performance, giving the motorcycle the character of an air-cooled 650 cc shaft-drive cruiser suited to relaxed road use.

The chassis uses a steel double-cradle frame and a deliberately stretched wheelbase. The XVS650AK(C) specification in this factory publication lists a 1,625 mm wheelbase, 710 mm seat height, spoke wheels and a single front disc with a rear drum brake. The companion XVS650K(C) supplement records the slimmer standard variant with a 1,610 mm wheelbase, 695 mm seat height, a 19-inch front wheel and revised suspension dimensions. Those differences show how Yamaha used one mechanical platform to support two distinct cruiser presentations without changing the basic 649 cc drivetrain.

In North America the same family became the V-Star 650, while DragStar branding was used in other markets. Yamaha continued the 650 platform for many years, expanding it through Custom, Classic and touring-oriented derivatives while retaining the air-cooled V-twin and shaft-drive architecture. The larger XVS1100 later extended the same design language into the liter class; Yamaha's 1998 announcement explicitly described that model as a larger realization of the established XVS650 Drag Star image, illustrating the 650's importance in the development of the Star/Drag Star cruiser range.
