Yamaha YZF-R6 Service Manual (1999)

Yamaha introduced the YZF-R6 as an all-new 1999 model and as the middleweight counterpart to the YZF-R1. The new machine was developed as a dedicated supersport rather than as a simple evolution of the YZF600R Thundercat. Its design centered on high engine speed, compact dimensions, low mass and sharp handling, bringing the R-series philosophy into the 600 class. Yamaha's official 1999 launch release describes the bike as a new extreme-supersport model created around exceptionally high specific output and circuit-oriented performance.

The original YZF-R6 uses a liquid-cooled DOHC inline-four with a 65.5 × 44.5 mm bore and stroke and a 12.4:1 compression ratio. Fuel is supplied by four Mikuni CVRD37 carburetors, with a forced-air intake system feeding the airbox through ducts beneath the headlights. Power passes through a wet multi-disc clutch, constant-mesh six-speed gearbox and chain final drive. This combination gave the first R6 the highly rev-oriented character that became one of the model line's defining traits.

The chassis was designed around equally aggressive weight and geometry targets. The first-generation bike uses an aluminum Deltabox II frame, a 1,380 mm wheelbase, 17-inch cast wheels and fully adjustable suspension. Factory data list a dry weight of 169 kg, dual 298 mm front brake discs and a compact 24-degree steering-head angle. These features placed the bike firmly in the 600cc supersport motorcycle category and helped distinguish it from more road-oriented middleweights of the period.

The 1999 model established the core R6 formula that Yamaha developed through the following generations. The original carbureted platform continued to evolve before a major redesign arrived for 2003 with electronic fuel injection, a new aluminum frame and extensive engine changes.
