About the Yamaha YZF-R7

Yamaha released the YZF-R7 in 1999 as the OW02 homologation model built to give Yamaha a purpose-developed production base for Superbike racing. Yamaha's own historical collection describes it as a 750 cc supersport that followed the YZF-R1 and YZF-R6, but with a much narrower competition role: only 500 units were sold worldwide. The machine combined race-oriented packaging with road registration equipment, making it one of the most specialized members of the early YZF-R family. See Yamaha's official YZF-R7 (OW02) collection page.

At its center is a 749 cm³ liquid-cooled DOHC inline-four with five valves per cylinder, a 72 × 46 mm bore and stroke and an 11.4:1 compression ratio. The engine uses a compact three-axis layout, titanium connecting rods and electronic fuel injection with twin injectors for each cylinder. Factory service data pairs the engine with a hydraulically released wet multi-disc clutch, a six-speed constant-mesh gearbox and chain final drive. Together these features make the original R7 a 749 cc OW02 homologation superbike rather than a conventional middleweight road model.

The chassis was equally competition-focused. Yamaha used an aluminum Deltabox II frame, 17-inch cast wheels, dual 320 mm front discs and fully adjustable suspension. Yamaha's historical specifications list a 1,400 mm wheelbase and 176 kg dry weight, while the factory service data details extensive adjustment for the inverted front fork and rear shock. Öhlins front and rear suspension equipment further distinguished the OW02 from Yamaha's higher-volume road-going sport models of the period.

The 1999 R7 also occupies an unusual place in Yamaha's model lineage. It arrived alongside the first-generation R6 and shortly after the original R1, but its limited-production homologation purpose meant it did not develop into a continuous street-model generation. Yamaha revived the R7 name in 2021 for a completely different 689 cm³ CP2-powered supersport based on the MT-07 platform. Yamaha explicitly notes that the newer R7 shares the name of the legendary 1999 OW02 while having entirely different character and positioning. See Yamaha's R-Series pedigree history.

This listing is based on the factory-issued Owner's Service Manual, part number 5FL-28199-E0, 1st Edition December 1998 and copyright 1999. The 381-page source is dedicated to the 1999 model and contains no later-year supplement, so the verified applicability is 1999 only.
