About the Yamaha YZF-R1

Yamaha launched the YZF-R1 as a 1998 production model after unveiling it in 1997, creating what became the foundation of Yamaha's modern R-Series. The motorcycle was developed around the idea of delivering exceptional performance and excitement on winding roads rather than simply building a homologation-oriented race replica. Yamaha's own historical material describes the original R1 as the model that began the R-Series lineage and helped redefine the emerging liter-class supersport category. Yamaha's R-Series history documents the 1998 R1 as the starting point of the family.

A key part of the first R1's engineering was its compact 998 cm³ liquid-cooled DOHC inline-four. The engine uses a 74.0 × 58.0 mm bore and stroke, 11.8:1 compression ratio and four Mikuni BDSR40 carburetors. Yamaha arranged the crankshaft, mainshaft and drive axle in a compact triangular layout to shorten the engine package, allowing a shorter wheelbase and a relatively long swingarm without making the motorcycle physically large. Power is transmitted through a wet multi-disc clutch, constant-mesh six-speed gearbox and chain final drive.

The chassis was designed to complement that compact engine layout. Yamaha used an aluminum Deltabox frame with a 1,395 mm wheelbase, 17-inch cast wheels and fully adjustable suspension. Factory specifications list a dry weight of 177 kg and wet weight of 198 kg, which were central to the R1's combination of liter-bike power and middleweight-like dimensions. Twin 298 mm front discs and a 245 mm rear disc handled braking. This balance of low mass, compact dimensions and strong engine performance established the machine as a first-generation 1000cc supersport motorcycle rather than a continuation of the larger, heavier open-class sportbikes that preceded it.

The original 1998 platform received a minor model change for 2000 and a larger redesign for 2002, when Yamaha introduced a new frame and fuel injection. Yamaha's later factory history explicitly describes 1998 as the first generation, followed by the 2000 and 2002 development stages. Yamaha's 2004 YZF-R1 launch release provides this generation context. Related publications are available in the Yamaha YZF-R1 service manual catalog.

This listing is based specifically on the factory manual marked YZF-R1 4XV1-AE1 '98, first edition October 1997. The 418-page publication covers specifications, periodic maintenance, engine overhaul, cooling, carburetion, chassis, electrical diagnosis and troubleshooting, with the factory wiring diagram at the end. It contains no 1999 supplement or later-year service section, so the verified applicability of this manual is 1998 only.
