About the Buell XB12X
Buell introduced the Ulysses for the 2006 model year as a new branch of the XB family, built around the idea of an “adventure sportbike” rather than a conventional dual-sport. The model grew from the same compact XB architecture that had first appeared with the Firebolt, but its development brief was different: Buell wanted a motorcycle that could cover long distances comfortably, handle rough pavement and graded dirt roads, carry a passenger and luggage, and still retain the responsive road manners associated with the XB chassis. Contemporary testing by Cycle World in September 2005 described the Ulysses as Buell’s rethink of the sport-touring role after the earlier S3T, with the project evolving from modified XB12S Lightning development bikes.
The production XB12X was more than a Lightning with taller suspension. Buell widened the fuel-carrying frame rails to increase fuel capacity to 4.4 US gallons, used a longer swingarm, increased suspension travel and ground clearance, and revised the steering geometry for greater stability on uneven surfaces. The bike retained characteristic XB features such as fuel stored in the aluminum frame, engine oil carried in the swingarm, the perimeter-mounted front brake and an under-engine exhaust. Its upright riding position, broad seat, handguards, luggage provisions and long-travel suspension gave the model a distinctly different role within the Buell range while keeping the same mass-centralization philosophy.
For its first model year, the Ulysses used the 1,203 cm³ Thunderstorm V-twin with a 88.9 mm bore, 96.82 mm stroke and 10:1 compression ratio. The factory service data specifies DDFI electronic fuel injection through a 49 mm downdraft intake, a five-speed transmission and toothed-belt final drive. The 2006 Ulysses also benefited from transmission and clutch revisions introduced across the 2006 Buell range. Cycle World noted that the new gearbox used quieter helical gears and dog rings, giving noticeably improved shift quality compared with earlier XB transmissions. The result was a motorcycle positioned between sport-touring and adventure machinery, with road-focused performance but greater comfort, suspension travel and utility than the Firebolt or Lightning lines.
Harley-Davidson’s official 2006 Ulysses documentation identifies Ulysses with the DX motorcycle-type code and confirms model code 7 for the XB12X, engine code 03 for the 1,203 cm³ engine and model-year code 6 for 2006. The Ulysses family later expanded with the more road-oriented XB12XT for 2008, while the original XB12X continued as the adventure-oriented version. Related manuals are available in the Buell Ulysses service manual catalog.
