About the Buell XB12R and XB9R
Buell created the Firebolt XB platform around a very specific goal: build an exceptionally compact, road-focused sportbike with strong real-world torque and minimal mass. The first production result was the XB9R, revealed in 2001 and launched for the 2002 model year. Cycle World’s original Firebolt technical preview documented how the project evolved away from a tubular frame when Buell engineers could not package the fuel tank, rear shock and airbox within the targeted 52-inch wheelbase. The solution was the large aluminum twin-spar frame that doubled as the fuel tank, paired with engine oil carried in the swingarm, an under-engine muffler and a perimeter-mounted front brake.
The XB9R established the basic Firebolt formula: a 984 cm³ short-stroke Thunderstorm V-twin, DDFI electronic fuel injection, a very short wheelbase and steep steering geometry. Rather than chasing peak horsepower, the engine was designed around a broad, usable powerband and strong torque delivery. The chassis, meanwhile, was built around mass centralization and low unsprung weight. Those ideas gave the Firebolt a distinct identity within the early-2000s sportbike market and created the core architecture from which Buell would develop a wider XB family.
For the 2004 model year, Buell expanded the Firebolt range with the XB12R. Cycle World’s 2003 preview of the XB12 models described the new 1,203 cm³ version as the response to riders who liked the XB chassis but wanted more power and torque. The larger engine retained the same 88.9 mm bore as the XB9R but used a longer 97.0 mm stroke. The 2004 service data also shows a larger 49 mm intake for the XB12R versus 45 mm on the XB9R, while both models retained DDFI injection, a five-speed gearbox and the same compact Firebolt chassis concept.
The XB12R also introduced model-specific features that distinguished it from the smaller Firebolt. The 2004 manual includes the XB12R interactive exhaust system, with an electronically controlled muffler valve used to alter exhaust flow according to operating conditions. The primary-drive gearing also differed between the two engines, while the final belt drive remained common. Together, the XB9R and XB12R defined the Firebolt line as a compact American V-twin sportbike family, with the 984 cm³ model emphasizing the original short-stroke concept and the 1,203 cm³ model adding stronger torque without abandoning the XB chassis philosophy.
Harley-Davidson’s official 2004 Firebolt parts documentation confirms Firebolt model code AX, 984 cc and 1,200 cc engine codes, and model-year code 4 for 2004. This listing corresponds to factory publication 99493-04Y for the 2004 Firebolt XB9R and XB12R. Related manuals are available in the Buell Firebolt service manual catalog.
