About the Buell XB12R and XB9R

Buell launched the Firebolt XB9R for the 2002 model year as the first production motorcycle built around the XB platform. The design was shaped by an unusually compact packaging brief: rather than fitting a conventional fuel tank above the engine, Buell used the aluminum twin-spar frame itself as the fuel reservoir, carried engine oil in the swingarm and positioned the exhaust beneath the engine. This architecture allowed a 52-inch wheelbase and concentrated major masses close to the motorcycle’s center. The original Cycle World XB9R technical preview documented how these decisions emerged from the attempt to build an exceptionally short, responsive American sportbike.

The XB9R used Buell’s 984 cm³ short-stroke Thunderstorm V-twin, with an 88.9 mm bore and 79.38 mm stroke. Its DDFI fuel injection, steep steering geometry, perimeter-mounted front brake and fully adjustable suspension gave the Firebolt a distinct engineering identity rather than following the layout of contemporary inline-four supersports. The XB9R also established the main themes that carried through later XB motorcycles: fuel-in-frame construction, oil-in-swingarm lubrication storage, belt final drive and strong emphasis on mass centralization.

Buell broadened the Firebolt family for 2004 with the XB12R. The larger version retained the same bore but increased stroke to approximately 97 mm, raising displacement to 1,203 cm³ and shifting the emphasis toward stronger torque. It also used a larger 49 mm intake compared with the XB9R’s 45 mm intake and added the electronically controlled interactive exhaust system. The two-model range allowed Buell to keep the quicker-revving 984 cm³ version alongside the more muscular 1,203 cm³ alternative while sharing the same compact chassis concept.

The 2006 model year brought a meaningful round of development across the XB platform rather than a simple carryover. Contemporary Buell launch material, preserved in Roadracing World’s 2006 XB announcement, states that Firebolt and Lightning models received a new transmission, a stiffer swingarm design and a redesigned intake system. The 2006 Firebolt specification also shows revised lower-gear transmission ratios while retaining direct fifth gear, plus a 27-tooth transmission sprocket, 65-tooth rear sprocket and 128-tooth belt. These updates refined the mature fuel-in-frame V-twin sportbike platform without changing the basic 52-inch-wheelbase Firebolt formula.

Harley-Davidson’s official 2006 Firebolt documentation confirms Firebolt model code AX, model-year code 6, East Troy assembly, and the post-May-2005 identifiers 1 for XB9R and 3 for XB12R. This listing corresponds specifically to factory publication 99493-06Y for the 2006 Firebolt models. Related documentation is available in the Buell Firebolt service manual catalog.
