About the Buell Lightning
Buell introduced the Lightning XB9S for the 2003 model year as the naked, upright counterpart to the XB9R Firebolt. The model also revived a Lightning name that had previously appeared on the S1 and X1 families, but the XB version represented a major architectural break. In its contemporary XB9S preview, Cycle World described the new Lightning as a stripped, street-focused interpretation of the XB platform, using a wide tubular handlebar, minimal bodywork and a more upright riding position while retaining the core chassis and engine hardware of the Firebolt.
The XB9S used Buell’s 984 cm³ Thunderstorm V-twin in an exceptionally compact chassis. Fuel was carried inside the aluminum twin-spar frame, engine oil was stored in the swingarm, the exhaust sat beneath the engine and the front brake used Buell’s perimeter-mounted Zero Torsional Load rotor. With a 52-inch wheelbase, steep steering geometry and strong low- and midrange torque, the Lightning developed its own identity as a fuel-in-frame streetfighter platform rather than simply a Firebolt without bodywork.
Buell broadened the Lightning family almost immediately. The XB9SL Lightning Low used the same 984 cm³ platform but paired it with lower suspension and a lower seat to make the compact XB chassis accessible to shorter riders. For 2004, the family expanded again with the XB12S. Cycle World’s 2003 preview of the new XB12 models identified the XB12S Lightning as one of two new 1,203 cm³ Buells for 2004. The larger engine retained the same 88.9 mm bore as the XB9 but increased stroke to 96.82 mm, adding displacement and torque while preserving the compact XB chassis concept.
The 2004 XB12S also brought model-specific technical changes. The factory service data specifies a 49 mm DDFI intake for the XB12S compared with 45 mm for the XB9S, along with different primary gearing and an electronically controlled interactive exhaust system. At the same time, the XB9S and XB9SL remained in the range, giving the Lightning family three distinct configurations built around the same core platform. Harley-Davidson’s official 2004 Lightning documentation confirms Lightning and Lightning Low model codes, 984 cc and 1,200 cc engine variants, model-year code 4 and East Troy assembly.
This listing corresponds to factory publication 99490-04Y for the 2004 Lightning family. The manual contains model-specific information for the XB9S, XB9SL and XB12S, including the larger XB12S engine and interactive-exhaust system. Related documentation is available in the Buell Lightning service manual catalog.
