About the Buell XB12X
Buell introduced the Ulysses for the 2006 model year as a new offshoot of the XB platform. Its development began with modified XB12S Lightning prototypes fitted with longer-travel suspension and tires suitable for rougher surfaces, then evolved into a dedicated machine with its own wider fuel-carrying frame rails, longer swingarm, revised steering geometry and increased ground clearance. Cycle World’s 2005 launch feature described Buell’s target as an “adventure-sportbike,” combining long-distance comfort and upright ergonomics with the compact handling character of the XB family.
The production XB12X retained the distinctive engineering ideas that defined Buell’s XB motorcycles: fuel stored in the aluminum frame, engine oil carried in the swingarm, a perimeter-mounted front brake and an under-engine exhaust. For the Ulysses, those elements were adapted around a 1,203 cm³ Thunderstorm V-twin, long-travel suspension, a larger 4.4 US gallon fuel capacity, passenger accommodation, handguards and luggage capability. The result occupied a different role from the Firebolt and Lightning ranges, emphasizing broken-road versatility and touring utility while remaining fundamentally road-oriented.
For 2007, Buell refined the Ulysses rather than redesigning it. Contemporary model-year coverage reported a reshaped seat that was narrower at the front and lower overall, reducing seat height to about 31.8 inches. The XB12X also changed from Dunlop D616 tires to Pirelli Scorpion Sync tires, received revised front fork springs and gained a revised functional airbox cover intended to improve airflow. These updates addressed rider fit, pavement handling and comfort while preserving the basic chassis, engine and long-travel suspension concept introduced the year before. In this form, the Ulysses remained Buell’s **adventure sport motorcycle** within the XB family.
Harley-Davidson’s official 2007 Ulysses VIN documentation identifies DX as the Ulysses motorcycle type, engine code 03 as the 1,203 cm³ engine, model-year code 7 as 2007 and model code 7 as the XB12X. The same factory specifications retain the 45-degree V-twin, DDFI electronic fuel injection, five-speed transmission and 27/65-tooth final-drive sprockets with a 135-tooth belt. The Ulysses line later broadened with the road-oriented XB12XT, but the XB12X remained the longer-travel, adventure-focused branch of the family. Related documentation is available in the Buell Ulysses service manual catalog.
This listing corresponds specifically to factory publication 99494-07Y, the 2007 Buell Ulysses Service Manual. It applies to the 2007 XB12X and contains factory procedures for maintenance, chassis, engine, fuel system, starter, drive/transmission, electrical systems, connector repair, wiring, hose routing and the Japanese-market active-intake system.
