Kawasaki ZRX1200R / ZRX1200S / ZRX1200 Service Manual (2001–2007)

Kawasaki introduced the ZRX1200 large-displacement road-sports series around the 2001 model year as the next development of the ZRX1100 concept. Kawasaki's 2001 annual report specifically describes the ZRX1200 as following the well-regarded ZRX1100 and strengthening the company's large sports-bike range in Japan, North America and Europe. The factory manual uses the umbrella name ZRX1200 while its cover also identifies the ZRX1200R and ZRX1200S body styles, reflecting the different market and fairing configurations documented within the ZR1200-A, B and C model families.

The motorcycle is built around an 1164 cc carbureted inline-four roadster engine: a liquid-cooled, four-stroke DOHC four-cylinder with four valves per cylinder, 79.0 × 59.4 mm bore and stroke and 10.1:1 compression ratio. Fuel metering is by four Keihin CVK36 carburetors rather than electronic fuel injection. The principal full-power factory specification lists 90 kW (122 PS) at 8,500 rpm and 112 N·m at 7,000 rpm, with different figures for several regional specifications and no horsepower or torque figure stated for U.S. and Canadian versions. Valve clearance is shim-adjusted at 0.13–0.19 mm intake and 0.18–0.24 mm exhaust.

Power passes through a wet multi-disc clutch and five-speed constant-mesh return-shift transmission to a chain final drive with a 2.470 reduction ratio. The tubular double-cradle chassis uses a 1,465 mm wheelbase, 25-degree rake and 106 mm trail. Factory specifications list 120/70 ZR17 front and 180/55 ZR17 rear tubeless tires, a conventional telescopic fork with 120 mm travel and twin-shock swingarm rear suspension with 123 mm travel. Braking is by dual front discs and a single rear disc. The manual lists a 19 L fuel tank, 790 mm seat height and dry mass varying by model from 222 to 228 kg.

Kawasaki's official 2001 annual report documents the ZRX1200 series launch and its relationship to the ZRX1100, while Kawasaki's 2004 ZRX1200R Owner Center page confirms the ZR1200-A model family. Kawasaki later released the Japan-market ZRX1200 DAEG in 2009 as a subsequent evolution, but that later motorcycle is outside this manual's compatibility.
