About the Yamaha YZF-R15
Yamaha introduced the YZF-R15 in India in 2008 as a new small-capacity supersport developed around the design and engineering philosophy of the larger YZF-R series. Yamaha presented the model at the 9th Auto Expo in New Delhi in January 2008 and described it as a machine intended to bring genuine supersport character to India's 150 cc class. It combined R-series styling with a compact chassis intended to work in city traffic, on winding roads and during more aggressive riding. See Yamaha's official 2008 launch announcement.
The first-generation machine used a newly developed 149.8 cm³ liquid-cooled, four-stroke SOHC single-cylinder engine with four valves and electronic fuel injection. Factory specifications list a 57.0 × 58.7 mm bore and stroke and a 10.4:1 compression ratio. A wet multi-disc clutch and six-speed constant-mesh transmission drive the rear wheel by chain. Yamaha also highlighted its DiASil aluminum cylinder and fuel-injection system, making the model a 150 cc liquid-cooled fuel-injected supersport rather than a conventional commuter with sport styling.
The chassis was a major part of the model's identity. Yamaha used a Deltabox frame, 17-inch cast wheels and disc brakes at both ends, with a 267 mm front disc and 203 mm rear disc in the factory specification. The bike's 1,290 mm wheelbase, 790 mm seat height and 131 kg wet weight gave it compact proportions, while telescopic front suspension and linked rear suspension supported the balance between urban use and sport-oriented handling that Yamaha emphasized at launch.
The original R15 established a distinct entry point into Yamaha's R-series family for the Indian market. In September 2011 Yamaha announced a major model change for the 2012 model year, describing it as an upgraded R15 that retained the existing model's basic performance while changing the bodywork, ECU settings, swingarm, rear tire and aerodynamic package. That announcement provides a clear generation break between the first-generation machine represented by this publication and the substantially revised version that followed. See Yamaha's official 2011 model-change announcement.
For related documentation, browse the Yamaha YZF-R15 category or the broader Yamaha catalog. This listing is based specifically on factory publication 20P-F8197-E0, whose cover identifies the 2008 model year. The 338-page PDF contains the original nine-chapter service structure and wiring diagram but no later model-year supplements, so its verified catalog applicability is 2008 only rather than the legacy 2008-2011 range.
