About the Kawasaki ABS
The Kawasaki Z650 was introduced for the 2017 model year as a new middleweight naked motorcycle and the successor to the ER-6n. Kawasaki retained the proven 649 cc parallel-twin engine concept but developed a significantly lighter motorcycle around it, with a new high-tensile steel frame and revised chassis. Kawasaki presented the Z650 alongside the redesigned Ninja 650 as part of a new generation of its middleweight twin-cylinder range.
The engine was tuned around accessible low- and mid-range torque rather than outright peak power, matching the Z650's road-focused character. For the standard unrestricted specification, the manual lists 50.2 kW, or 68 PS, at 8,000 rpm and 65.7 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm. Kawasaki also produced reduced-power versions for markets such as Australia’s LAMS category. The 2017 redesign improved fuel efficiency compared with the previous ER-6n while also reducing overall weight.
A major change was the chassis. Kawasaki replaced the ER-6n's earlier frame arrangement with a lightweight tubular steel diamond frame and horizontal back-link rear suspension. The standard Z650 is represented by the ER650G family, while the Z650 ABS uses the ER650H designation. Both versions share the same basic 649 cc engine and six-speed transmission, with the ABS model adding the anti-lock braking hardware and associated electronics covered separately in the service manual.
This manual covers the first model year of the Z650 generation, specifically the 2017 ER650GH and ER650HH. Its factory procedures include both standard and ABS-specific systems, making it suitable for servicing the complete 2017 Z650 range rather than only one brake configuration. Kawasaki subsequently revised the same ER650G/H service-manual family for later model years, but this 99924-1516-01 edition is the original 2017 publication.
