About the Triumph 800 and 800 XC
Triumph unveiled the Tiger 800 and Tiger 800 XC in November 2010 as new models for the 2011 model year, marking the company's entry into the middleweight adventure-touring category. Both motorcycles were built around a new 800 cc three-cylinder engine derived from Triumph's existing triple-cylinder experience but developed for a broader, more flexible torque delivery. Triumph rated the engine at approximately 95 PS and 79 Nm, giving the new Tigers a combination of road performance and controllability suited to touring and mixed-surface riding.
The two versions shared the engine, steel trellis frame and core drivetrain, but Triumph gave them distinctly different roles. The Tiger 800 was the more road-oriented motorcycle, with cast wheels, a 19-inch front wheel and shorter-travel suspension. The Tiger 800 XC used a 21-inch wire-spoke front wheel, wire-spoke rear wheel and significantly longer suspension travel, making it the more capable choice for rough roads and off-road riding. ABS was available and could be switched off for off-road use.
The original Tiger 800 platform quickly became an important part of Triumph's adventure range and remained mechanically recognizable over the following model years. Triumph's 2013 technical service documentation continued to list service manual T3856760 Issue 1 specifically for the Tiger 800, Tiger 800 ABS, Tiger 800XC and Tiger 800XC ABS. The original motorcycle itself continued into 2014, although Triumph's 2014 service-literature catalog points to newer service-manual references rather than this specific December 2010 issue.
Triumph later expanded and substantially revised the Tiger 800 family, introducing the XR, XRx, XC, XCx and later XRt/XCa derivatives with progressively more sophisticated electronics, ride-by-wire control, traction control and riding modes. Those later motorcycles should be treated separately in the catalog. The attached 3856760 Issue 1 publication is best positioned as the factory manual for the original 2011-2013 Tiger 800 and Tiger 800 XC generation, including their ABS variants.
