Ducati Monster S4 / S4 Fogarty Service Manual (2002)

Ducati moved the Monster into a new performance category in 2001 with the S4. Until then, the Monster family had been defined mainly by air-cooled two-valve Desmodue engines, but Ducati’s official Monster chronology records the S4 as the model that introduced the 916 cm³ Desmoquattro engine and completely new running gear to the range. That combination preserved the exposed trellis-frame identity of the original Monster while bringing liquid cooling, four valves per cylinder and superbike-derived performance into Ducati’s naked-bike line.

For 2002, the S4 retained the 916 cm³, 94 × 68 mm Desmoquattro V-twin with 11:1 compression. Factory specifications list 74 kW (101 hp) at 8,750 rpm and 92 Nm at 7,000 rpm, with Marelli I.A.W. 5.9M electronic fuel injection, a hydraulically operated dry clutch and a six-speed gearbox. The chassis used a high-strength steel trellis frame, adjustable 43 mm upside-down fork, progressive rear suspension, Marchesini 17-inch wheels and twin 320 mm Brembo front discs. The result was a liquid-cooled four-valve naked sportbike that combined the visual simplicity of the Monster with technology previously associated more closely with Ducati’s faired superbikes.

The 2002 range also included the Monster S4 Fogarty, a tribute to Carl Fogarty after the end of his racing career. Ducati’s official Fogarty history records his four World Superbike championships with Ducati in 1994, 1995, 1998 and 1999 and his 55 race victories. The Fogarty edition connected the road-going Monster directly with that racing legacy through distinctive graphics and special equipment, while retaining the core 916-powered S4 platform documented in this publication.

The S4 established the high-performance branch of the Monster family that Ducati continued to develop. The company’s chronology shows the next major step arriving with the S4R, which added a 996 cm³ engine, single-sided swingarm and substantially revised styling, followed later by the S4R S Testastretta. In retrospect, the original 916-powered S4 was the bridge between the first-generation air-cooled Monsters and the increasingly superbike-derived four-valve Monsters that followed, while still retaining the compact proportions and exposed mechanical character of the original concept.
