Ducati Monster S2R 800/S2R 800 Dark Supplementary Manual (2006)

Ducati expanded the Monster family in 2005 with the S2R 800, creating an air-cooled middleweight that borrowed much of the visual and chassis attitude of the liquid-cooled S4R. Ducati’s official Monster chronology records the S2R’s arrival in 2005, one year after the S4R introduced the single-sided swingarm and more aggressive styling direction to the range. The S2R kept the simpler two-valve Desmodue engine, making it a lighter-cost, road-focused counterpart to the four-valve S4R.

Period Cycle World launch coverage describes the S2R as Ducati’s new middleweight sporty entry in the Monster line. Its 803 cm³ air-cooled twin used the familiar 88 × 66 mm dimensions and shared basic engine architecture and wet-clutch design with smaller Monsters, but the chassis presentation was much more distinctive. The model adopted the S4R-style tubular aluminum single-sided swingarm, stacked exhaust silencers and racing-stripe graphics, giving the air-cooled Monster a more technical appearance without moving to a liquid-cooled superbike engine.

The 2006 specification retained the same core layout. Ducati’s factory data lists an 803 cm³, two-valve-per-cylinder Desmodue L-twin producing 55 kW (77 hp) at 8,250 rpm and 70 Nm at 6,500 rpm, with Marelli 5AM2 electronic injection, a six-speed transmission and hydraulic APTC wet clutch. The steel trellis frame, 1,440 mm wheelbase, 43 mm upside-down fork and progressive rear suspension combined with 17-inch wheels and the characteristic single-sided rear hub. Together these features gave the S2R a clear identity as an air-cooled single-sided-swingarm Monster rather than simply another displacement variant of the earlier M800.

The S2R line broadened for 2006 when Ducati added the S2R 1000. Ducati’s chronology records that larger model as the next step in the family, while Cycle World noted that the S2R 800 returned essentially unchanged alongside it. The 1000 brought the larger Dual Spark engine and higher-specification chassis components, but the 800 remained the more accessible version of the same styling concept. This placed the S2R 800 between the traditional air-cooled Monsters and the more powerful S4R/S4Rs machines, preserving the original Monster emphasis on usable road performance, mechanical visibility and relatively simple two-valve engineering.
