About the Kawasaki 1000
The Kawasaki Versys 1000 was introduced for the 2012 model year as the largest member of the Versys family. It extended Kawasaki's road-focused Versys concept into the liter-class category, combining an upright riding position and long-travel suspension with a four-cylinder engine intended for touring and everyday road use. The first-generation motorcycle carried the KLZ1000A model designation, with this initial 2012 version identified as KLZ1000AC.
Power came from a 1,043 cc liquid-cooled DOHC inline-four, configured to emphasize usable low- and mid-range performance. In the factory manual, the unrestricted 2012 specification is rated at 86.8 kW (118 PS) at 9,000 rpm and 102 Nm at 7,700 rpm. The motorcycle also introduced a substantial electronics package for the Versys range, including KTRC traction control, selectable power modes and ABS, supported by front and rear wheel-speed sensors and ECU-based self-diagnosis.
The original KLZ1000A generation continued through 2013 and 2014, with later model codes including KLZ1000AD and KLZ1000AE. Kawasaki subsequently issued English service-manual revision 99924-1449-02, which its parts documentation lists for the 2012, 2013 and 2014 European models. This distinction matters for this download because the earlier 99924-1449-01 PDF offered here contains only the 2012 KLZ1000AC in its official Model Application table.
For 2015, Kawasaki moved the Versys 1000 to the KLZ1000B family, accompanied by a different service-manual series. That makes the 2012-2014 KLZ1000A bikes the first distinct generation of the Versys 1000, often referred to by owners as the Mk1. This manual therefore documents the launch-year specification of that first generation rather than the later redesigned motorcycle. Kawasaki's 2015 documentation identifies the succeeding model as KLZ1000B.
