About the Kawasaki S and SE
The Versys 1000 entered a substantially revised generation for the 2019 model year, with Kawasaki moving the platform toward a much more sophisticated electronics package while retaining the 1,043 cc inline-four engine and road-focused adventure-touring concept. The 2019 Versys 1000 SE gained electronic throttle valves, an IMU, KCMF cornering management, KIBS, electronic cruise control, Kawasaki Quick Shifter and a TFT display with smartphone connectivity. Kawasaki also introduced LED cornering lights and revised the engine calibration, exhaust and bodywork.
A defining feature of the Versys 1000 SE, model family KLZ1000D, was Kawasaki Electronic Control Suspension. KECS electronically adjusts compression and rebound damping using information from suspension stroke sensors, the IMU and vehicle systems. The SE also allows electronic rear preload adjustment. These systems are extensively documented in this factory manual, including front-fork sensors and solenoids, rear shock sensors, the preload actuator and KECS self-diagnosis procedures.
For 2021, Kawasaki expanded the range with the Versys 1000 S, identified as the KLZ1000E family. The S retained much of the sophisticated equipment associated with the SE, including the TFT instrumentation, IMU-based electronics, electronic cruise control, quick shifter and cornering lights, but used manually adjustable conventional suspension rather than KECS. Kawasaki therefore positioned the S between the standard Versys 1000 and the electronically suspended SE.
The uploaded service manual follows this evolution directly. It covers KLZ1000D from 2019 through 2023, with codes DK, DL, DM, DN and DP, and adds KLZ1000E for 2021-2023, with codes EM, EN and EP. This makes the 99832-0018-07 revision a particularly useful manual for the third-generation Versys 1000 S/SE platform because it consolidates five model years and both suspension configurations into one factory service publication.
