About the Kawasaki 1000
The Kawasaki Versys 1000 originally appeared for the 2012 model year, combining a 1,043 cc inline-four engine with long-travel suspension, an upright riding position and 17-inch road wheels. Rather than pursuing off-road use, Kawasaki developed the Versys 1000 around versatile street riding, from urban traffic and mountain roads to long-distance highway touring.
For 2015, Kawasaki substantially updated the Versys 1000, creating the generation commonly referred to as the Mk2. The basic 1,043 cc inline-four engine, long-stroke suspension and 17-inch wheel concept remained, but Kawasaki redesigned the bodywork and front end and added an Assist & Slipper Clutch as standard equipment. Output increased slightly compared with the original model, with the factory manual listing 120 PS for the unrestricted KLZ1000BF specification.
The revised model retained KTRC traction control, selectable power modes and ABS, while Kawasaki also improved fuel economy and emissions performance. Kawasaki states that the 2015 model achieved approximately 5% better WMTC fuel economy and a modest increase in output compared with the 2012 version. This combination of touring equipment, electronic rider aids and revised styling defined the second-generation Versys 1000 through the following model years.
The service manual offered here is the original 99924-1487-01 edition and applies specifically to the 2015 KLZ1000BF. Kawasaki subsequently revised the KLZ1000B service manual, with the later 99924-1487-04 listed for models through 2018. For 2019, Kawasaki introduced another major update with electronic throttle control and an IMU-based electronics package, clearly separating that later generation from the motorcycle covered by this PDF.
